Dr. Wayne Pernell argues that AI can't spontaneously become conscious or hostile without a programmer deliberately embedding those traits. Humans are the only species that wage organized war. For AI to develop malice, jealousy, or self-awareness, a programmer would need to understand and code those emotions first, which Pernell sees as unlikely.

There are millions and millions of species on this planet, and there's only one species which wages organized war against each other, and that's humans. There is no other species on this planet that does that. So in order for an AI to become self aware or ambitious or jealous, somebody will need to be like to program some sort of algorithm to put into AI and say, okay, now you are going to be jealous of another species, and you're going to have to have like a nefarious mindset. Mindset to. To figure out how to destroy other human beings or other species. And that just sounds really ridiculous to me, because in order for somebody to be, you know, create that kind of algorithm, you yourself have to be so self aware, you yourself have to understand where all these sort of negative emotions originate and all that.
