And then I read this book about NLP and it talked about certain things having to do with language and how that helps people establish rapport. And I was like, well, can't hurt to try it. And I went out to one of those people who I had never been able to talk to before and I used the technique in the book and it boom, we became friends. And I was like, isn't that interesting? And of course there were two learnings there. One learning is although I am a big, big, big believer in research and I believe that things that have been researched have a much higher likelihood of being true and accurate than things that have not been, research is not perfect and sometimes research for one reason or another doesn't actually get at the truth. And number two, that there are models of human cognition and psychology and linguistics other than the ones that are currently accepted by the academic world that seem to work better than what the academic world knows.
