This tiny mic does… everything? BOYA Magic 4-in-1 Microphone Review

Dylan Andersen reviews the BOYA Magic, a $100 wireless mic that switches between shotgun, lavalier, handheld, and desktop modes via magnets. It lasts six hours on battery, plus 30 more from the case. The AI noise cancellation is convenient but doesn't match post-production tools, and the receiver feels flimsy compared to pricier competitors like the DJI Mic 2.

All right, so this is the Boya Magic AI powered transformable microphone. This thing is kind of wild. Like, Boya Magic reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to check out this microphone and play with it and give my thoughts on it. I said, yeah, absolutely.
I don't know that I've seen something like this.
I'm pretty sure this is the first time in the market this thing exists, but it's awesome. So I'm recording this voiceover with the microphone as well, so you can listen to how the audio sounds. But basically, unboxing experience is cool. You get this case. One thing I like about this case is there are actually two zippers. So I don't know why, but that's like a must for me on a lot of bags and stuff. And sometimes you don't see it. Ton of accessories in here. You got USB C to USB C. You got USB A to USB C. You've got the TRS cable. That's a must have. Got just a ton of little things in here that they give you, which I think is super cool. So this is the charging case. This has basically the shotgun microphone element. This also has where the two transceivers go. And this is actually the USB C Lightning wireless adapter there.
And this is also the desktop stand.
So pretty cool little tripod that the shotgun mic can mount to.
This is the light.
Excuse me. No, this is the receiver. The one thing about this receiver, I will point out, is it's pretty kind of flimsy feeling. Very, like, cheap feeling. Probably does its job. But the DJI and Full well and some of the other mics that I played with are a little bit better. Here's the Lightning wireless receiver. But so far, I mean, pretty cool little camera that I'm definitely enjoying. Got a dead cat, a couple dead cats for the actual tiny microphones themselves. But the case is nice, bag, whatever you want to call it. Pretty cool. So this is the shotgun mic. Kind of opens up like a little casket, and you've got these tiny little microphones. You've got a magnet on the back just like the DJI mics and all the other stuff on the market. You also have that little clip, which is cool. And you get two of them. Super, super, super cool. So you get six hours of battery life outside of the case, and then additional 30 hours if you use the case to power. So tons of battery. Super, super helpful. I have a really tiny microphone in front of me today. I'm super excited to talk to you guys about. So this Is the Boya Magic AI Powered transformable mini wireless microphone. Massive title, but it's a really cool microphone. You can see how small it is. This is much smaller than the DJI Mini or even the DJI 2 and the upcoming DJI Mic 3. Super cool microphone. I'm curious to see how it sounds. Let me know how you think this sounds. I'm just kind of holding it at arm's length there. But the coolest thing about this microphone is that it transforms into multiple different form fact. So I have this here in my hand. We have a shotgun microphone that can either act as a clip on to a desktop microphone, kind of keep it at your desk and stream with it. It could even go and clip onto yourself. There's even a magnet on here. Take a look. If I can get this to focus. Tiny little magnet. World's smallest little magnet there. And then of course have a little clip on as well. You can also do this handheld and kind of do like a street interview with this microphone. Comes with a windscreen and the dead cat. And I think one of the cooler parts of this microphone is there is a wireless transceiver. See if you can see this here. This is a wireless transceiver. They have a USB C1. They also have a lightning one. I can't wait for lightning to die. But super excited to test out this microphone. I'm going to play with it in the different form factors right now. Again, I'm holding the wireless microphone synced up to to the wireless transceiver which is super, super small on top of the camera. I'm also going to play with it where this shotgun microphone setup is also mounted to the camera. But the coolest thing here, check this out. These actually go into the case itself. And this is actually doubles as a charging case. So super, super cool. So again, you've got the handheld. If you want, you can clip this on or bring a magnet to yourself and have this on you. You can put them both in here and use this as a not just charging case, but also shotgun mic. You can hold it and kind of do street interviews, have it on top of the camera multiple ways. This microphone transforms. So let's get into it. Let's see what we think about the Boya Magic AI powered transformable mini wireless microphone. Here we go.
All right, we are outside now. I've got the Boya Magic Mike in its little lavalier clip on magnet mode here. And again, this microphone is so small.
I think that's been the biggest takeaway for me.
It's A lot smaller than what I'm typically used to, which is my DJI mic.
I mean, you can just kind of.
See just how small those, you know, really are.
You know, the dead cat here takes up most of it, but I'm going.
To compare it to the DJI mic. I also brought out my. This is the Rode videomic. Go to.
It's actually a really cool shotgun mic. I really am enjoying that.
But I'll compare it to that. I think, regardless, this thing is so nice because it is transformable and also.
Because it is so small. And so far the battery life's been great as well.
So this is what it sounds like. I'm holding it about six inches away from my mouth. I'm going to check to see what it sounds like in the AI noise canceling mode. And there's a little button on here. You just press once the LED turns green and that mode turns on. So let's go ahead and switch that on.
All right, so the wind is really.
Picking up now, so not sure if you can hear it, but certainly this is what it sounds like with the AI noise canceling mode on. I'm not a big fan of these modes. I think that regardless of what you're doing, typically you can take a video into an NLE like DaVinci Resolve or Premiere and use one of their kind of voice isolation modes. I find that that post processing tends.
To be a lot better than this on device processing.
That being said, totally not lost on.
Me that a lot of folks that.
Are creating on their phones or, you know, they're just out and about, they.
Don'T want to deal with all that they want to post straight to social media. This would be a good kind of option for them.
So this is what it sounds like.
With the AI noise canceling on. Let's go ahead and turn it off. Nice.
And one of the cool things, you can turn that on and off during the fly. Because I'm actually hooked into the camera.
Here, I'm actually going to show you kind of what the setup looks like here.
So. All right, so here we have the top of the camera. Again, this is kind of what I was mentioning earlier. I'm a little bit disappointed that the only way that this will actually go on the camera is if the kind of, you know, pairing lights are facing away from you. So kind of a strange thing. It doesn't fit on the hot shoe just because of this clip. I'm sure you can clip it to.
Your body or do something else, but.
I really would have Wished that that would have been kind of facing you because as you're looking at the camera.
Obviously it's like, wow. I don't know if it's paired, but.
How many times are you checking the pairing? So it doesn't really matter, but there's.
Kind of what the setup looks like.
All right, what else? So I want to compare this to a couple different microphones. I think the DJI Mic 2, the Mic 3 is coming out. But this has been such a great microphone. I don't really play with a 32 bit float. I don't really do all of that. But I want to check and see what this sounds like compared to that. So let's go ahead and do kind.
Of a side by side. All right.
And now I have the DJI Mic 2 paired to my camera with the kind of wireless transceiver or, excuse me, receiver on top. This is just one of the regular transceivers. Nothing special has been turned on. This is just going straight into the camera. This is what it sounds like.
About six inches away from my mouth.
Wind is probably a little bit worse.
Than the last clip, but you can get a good sense of what this sounds like.
So again, this is the DJI Mic.
2 paired directly to my camera.
This is what it sounds like. All right, so you're listening to the camera mounted shotgun mic. This is the Rode videomic Go ii. I love this mic because it has a direct USB C connection. You can actually plug this in directly to your computer and kind of film some voiceover with it, which it's fantastic for that. But one thing you'll probably notice, I'm assuming I haven't listened to this yet, but the audio coming from the top shotgun mounted microphone is going to be a lot worse than something you know when you're holding it up close like this. So I think that this will be good for kind of Run and gun. It's a very cheap mic. It's well done. But as you can kind of hear that the wind kicking, not sure if the dead cat's doing too well, but that's kind of what the Videomic go to sounds like in comparison to the other mics that you just heard. All right, we are recording the audio through the USB mic. I'm directly paired into my phone, which is a Samsung Z Fold 7. Curious what it sounds like. I'm still holding it about six inches.
Away from my mouth.
Kind of the typical setup.
So nice thing is, again, I have.
The AI noise cancellation on. I'm curious what that sounds like.
Cuz I don't have the dead cat.
On at this moment. I'm also interested in seeing what it.
Sounds like with it off. So let's go ahead and turn that AI noise cancellation off.
All right, so this is what the AI noise cancellation off sounds like again, paired in directly to the phone. This is kind of a cool setup, right? Being able to put that lavalier mic in there and then if I wanted.
To have the other mic here, I.
Can pair that on somebody and sort.
Of have this two way conversation.
Or if I didn't want to use.
The shotgun mic at all, I would just definitely use the lavalier kind of clip on mics by themselves.
So they're small enough, they're inconspicuous enough.
I do like that quite a bit. But yeah, pretty cool. Let me know how this sounds.
All right, so as the wind kicks up, I kind of want to put my final thoughts together on this microphone. So two things. I know it's cliche, I know everybody says it, but who is this mic for? I mean, that's really a good question. Is it for content creators, right? Is it for prosumer folks who are doing YouTube videos on their nice kind of DSLR camera or mirrorless camera? Is it for people who are only going to be using their phone and they're going to be filming their videos and they want a good mic for this? Honestly, regardless of who you are, I think the price on this is good enough. Like just around $100 depending on what package you get. I know the creator kit here that I'm actually really impressed with because it's actually a nice bag in my opinion, a little bit almost as good as this DJI bag. But Boya did a really good job in terms of what this creator kit looks like and what you get. Just the versatility on this microphone has been great and I think that's where I would leave this. I don't think that this is the best sounding mic in the world, nor do I think it's trying to be. I think what Boya is trying to do, and this is my 100% personal opinion, I think they're trying to be the most versatile mic in the world. I know DJI is not really trying to do that, right? Like they've kind of just thrown their mic and said here, use 32 bit float or use, you know, direct in or whatever the case is. But I think Boya is like, we want to be the most versatile, we want to give people options. And so again, if you want a shotgun mic and you want to save some money. Yeah, probably go buy a rode videomic. Go to it sounds good for what it is, but most people who are filming themselves, they probably don't want to use a shotgun microphone now that these wireless mics have gotten so good. So having said that, I think you know what Boya is doing here. Trying to be the most versatile mic. I think they've succeeded at that and I think again, for the price, it's kind of a no brainer. Again, what package you choose is going to be up to you. But ultimately I think you saw the success of the Kickstarter campaign that Boya ran for this. People kind of want a versatile mic. Having said that, I think again the selling point for me as somebody who certainly loves filming videos and does want some quality sound because you could probably get something like this and hold it up to your face and have DaVinci or Premiere do one of their kind of AI voice isolation things. Any mic will be fine for you, but for me, I love how small this is. Right. I think my biggest hurdle with the DJI is just how big it is. But this also sounds incredible, right? So again, this is with technology there's always trade offs and you kind of have to determine for yourself what's the most valuable thing. For me, I'm not super into the transformability of this mic. It's really cool, it works, it makes sense. But for me, I have a kind of singular use case. Honestly, I think you'll see me using this Boya mic in future videos just because it's small and it's, it's fast. I also like the fact that the AI noise cancellation is one button. It's simple, it makes sense for my kind of peanut brain that I have. But having said that, again, I'm really impressed with this mic. I think it's a win. I think it's a pickup, especially if you're in that price bracket. If you want to spend 299, 349, I would probably say go get the DJI Mic 2 and I think the Mic 3 will be probably a little bit more expensive than this. But those are pro mics, right? Those are prosumer mics where you can do 32 bit internal float, etc.
Etc.
But if you're at the lower end of the price bracket, instead of getting a DJI mic mini, I would probably get this Boya mic. Although if you have a pocket 3 or an action 5 like I do probably want to get a DJI mic as well. Just because it pairs so quickly. So those are my thoughts. I really appreciate you guys watching the video, you know, trying to get some more subscribers here on YouTube. You know, please feel free to subscribe. I cover all things tech, cameras, audio, all this fun stuff. But it's been great chatting with you guys. Hopefully you enjoyed the mic, and hopefully this video was fun. I'll catch you in the next one. See ya.
