A short how-to on negotiating when buying couches: the speaker explains targeting 'diamonds in the rough', using aggressive lowball offers to elicit counteroffers, learning the seller's bottom price, then bargaining (e.g., meet-in-the-middle) to achieve a better final price—often saving about $100 versus an unskilled buyer.

So the key thing here is to be able to get good deals on the couches. And so we're not looking for every single couch. What we're trying to find is the diamond in the rough. People who will work with us, you go super low, you lowball them like crazy. What's going to happen is they're going to come back in counter at, let's say, I'll take 280. Well, now you're basically at where you would have offered it before anyways. And so now, now you know their bottom price. Now from there you got to work them, work them down. So what you negotiate is go, I'm at 120. What's the lowest you take? Then they come down, and from there you say, okay, you're at. Now you're at 280. I'm at 120. How about we meet in the middle? So what you did is you already brought them down and then you split again. And so you were able to get it for, let's say, $100 less than someone who doesn't know how to negotiate was able to do.
