A short YouTube video (by Dylan Vanas) arguing that Billy Mays is the 'king' of infomercials, noting his role promoting products like OxiClean and claiming he sold over a billion dollars' worth of product. The clip highlights his persuasive delivery and examples of product demonstrations (e.g., oxygen removing tough stains).
It's amazing. Watch how Oxiclean.
So this man is the king of infomercials. He sold over a billion dollars worth of product. Here's why.
Oxygen making tough stains disappear like magic.
He came at everything with massive amounts of energy and enthusiasm and said things very simply and in a clear way. Right. So some of the biggest things he's good at, communication. He was able to help people understand how and why they should use these products. Oxiclean obviously was one of his biggest ones. But let's see. They came like these sticks of like this play doh like stuff. It was not that eas. You actually had to knead it with a lot of vigorousness. So look, the reality is these products in infomercials generally don't do what people pay to do. But they're getting in front of people. Even if the company has terrible reviews, they're getting their product in front of enough people with the enthusiasm and energy that stops, breaks the pattern of what they're currently doing and gives them something to watch, to be entertained by. So infomercials are an outdated way of marketing. It'll be interesting to see the new wave of that. I don't know what that looks like, but that's why Billy Mays was so successful.
