Stop losing and start winning (how-to)

Dylan Vergara identifies five habits that hold back struggling sales reps: looking unprofessional, acting unprofessional, being too picky about opportunities, quitting early, and refusing feedback. Winners do the opposite: they believe in themselves relentlessly, execute after planning, stay curious, use networks to learn faster, and leverage community.

What's going on, you guys? It is a beautiful Thursday morning. We got our cold brew and we are talking about things that the losers do and things that the winners do. So I've worked with a ton of sales reps, a ton of business owners, and a lot of people in this online space. And there's some traits that I've picked up on that have served some people really well and crushed other people that you might not be aware of. So I want to bring these to your attention. Hopefully you are aware of them, but Really quick, I'm going to talk about 5 traits that I see in the losers and then 5 traits that I see in the winners. And these aren't just over, again, like 1, 2, 3 conversations. This is over hundreds of conversations with sales reps and business owners. When we get into the traits of the losers, the very first one, which is really within your control, is not looking the part. If you don't look the part, you're not going to be taken as the part, which then you're really limiting the opportunity that you're exposing yourself into. If you're watching this, I assume you're a sales rep or a business owner. It's ironic because I'm here wearing a hat that says Mushroom Cowboy. I'm not a drug dealer, I promise. It's a house show coffee thing in Austin. But not looking the part on an interview, on a sales call, and misrepresenting yourself, misrepresenting your product, your company, and It's really limiting your potential, whether you know it or not. The second thing that I've seen across the losers is not acting the part. So not acting like you are the guy that can solve the problem at hand, or not acting like you're the guy they need to be talking to. The way that you come and present yourself in these scenarios, again, very much so has an impact on whether or not you are considered to be the one, whether it's being a hire or a service provider. Whatever. So if you don't look the part, you're not even going to really get the opportunity to be considered to be the part. But if you don't act like you are the part, you're again just shooting yourself in the foot. Third trait of the losers is you're too selective when shooting. This I'm going to talk about from the sales rep perspective for a little bit. Every single time that I meet with these sales reps in my community, um, and even outside the community— I don't want to hate, I don't want to hate on my community, guys— but the ones that struggle to find jobs in a timely manner, it always boils down to the same thing or the 2 same things. It's not the experience they have. It's never that. It's they either didn't apply to any jobs or they were too selective about the jobs that they applied to, hence them not applying to that many jobs. If someone comes back to me and they say, hey man, I applied to 30 jobs, hey man, I applied to 50 jobs, we never have this issue. So as a sales rep or a business owner, if you are too selective about who you want to work with, now obviously do due diligence, don't work with people you straight up should not be doing. But if you're being picky when you're just trying to get your foot in the door, when you're trying to get your first case study, that is holding you back. Number 4 of trait of the losers is they don't see it through. So the losers give up really easily. They quit early. They do more time thinking and less time executing, which you should think before you execute so you're executing in the right direction. But then you need to kind of turn your brain off and just do the work in front of you. A lot of people, when they start doing the work in front of them and they don't get the immediate result, get discouraged and they think, oh, you know what, copywriting would be easier, or lead generation would be easier than this. So losers don't see it through. You almost have to lower your IQ a couple points So you can see it through and you don't question yourself too much on, is this right? Am I in the right direction? Am I doing the right thing? Am I wasting time? Turn it off. Do the work in front of you. Last thing, trait of the losers. They're stubborn and solo. So losers are not very receptive to feedback. They're not very receptive to outside information. Now, as a loser, you should vet where you get your information from, but if it's clearly from someone that knows what they're talking about, they've done this before, they've been where you're at, listen to them. And then also, They're solo. I used to, I used to be victim of this is I was pretty shy to myself. I thought I knew more than I did in a lot of things that I tried, and I never really went out of my way to meet other people who do what I do. So being stubborn and shutting out outside perspective and keeping yourself away from being exposed to outside perspective. I posted, or I talked about this in a recent video, but perspective is what helps you make better decisions. And if you're shutting out ideas and shutting out other people and you're just in your own echo chamber, Good luck. So those are some traits of guys that I see who struggle. They don't get the traction they want. They end up jumping from one thing to the next. If you have all those, you're doing straight up. I'm sorry. Let's talk about the winners. So these are traits that I've seen from people who usually get the result that they're looking for, be it a sales job, a client, a client base, a successful company, whatever. Number one, delusional self-belief. These guys don't care if you tell them they're wrong. They don't care if you think their idea is stupid. They don't care if you don't think it's going to work or if someone else doesn't think it's going to work. They know it's going to work. Now, is it going to work? We don't know. But if it is going to work, you have a lot higher chance of it working if you delusionally believe that it will. So that's number one, delusional self-belief that you can do the job. And you'd be surprised how far you can get with that, to be honest. Next thing, execute ruthlessly. They think before they act and then they just act. So the opposite of what the losers do is You know, think enough to make sure that you are going to act in the right direction. And then once you're— once it's time to act, stop thinking. Write out your game plan, make sure you know exactly what you should do in the strategic manner, and then stop thinking and do. Number 3 of the winners: understand that you don't know it all. So kind of the opposite of being stubborn, but knowing that you have a lot to learn is so powerful because then you're receptive to meeting people and taking outside opinions. Now again, Vet who you're getting your opinions from. But if you know, like even if you're top 98, 99% of what you do and you keep in the back of your mind that you're a student, you're not an expert. I mean, one conversation, you could go out for a morning coffee, have one conversation with a barista who their whole life they've been a barista, done nothing else. And through that conversation, it triggers one thing in your mind that makes you consider something else different in your business that has a trickle-down effect that changes your life. So always just be a student. That's one thing that I've really been trying to embody lately is, you know, just be open to ideas. Now, if the ideas just genuinely do not serve you, get rid of them, like kick them out. But if there's something to work with there, be open to it, you know, run it through some ideation and you'd be surprised what you can make happen with just like the littlest ideas. Then the 4th thing here is winners shorten their learning curve whatever way possible. Whether that's through access, network, location, time. There have been a lot of people between successful and non-successful. It's a, it's a lack of information and application of the information over a period of time. So if you can shorten that period to where you learn more faster or you get connected to the right people faster to become successful faster like this, becoming successful is a compounded effect. You don't just like snap your fingers and you are successful. So whatever you can do in this complex formula of what it takes to become successful, to make it happen sooner, you are going to start compounding sooner. So shortening the learning curve by paying to get access, getting, getting connected to people, studying material that you know is beneficial for you that you're probably not studying, whatever you can do, do it. And the 5th thing of the winner, the winners of sales reps business owners is they use the stuff that I have, the stuff that I've created.
