Skip wrapping your thumb around dumbbells during rows and lat pulldowns. It kills back activation by forcing your forearms to work harder. Use wrist straps if grip is the problem, so you can load heavier and actually feel your back.

Not my goodies, not my goodies, not my goodies.
If you only feel your forearm and your biceps during rows, or when you're doing lat pulldowns, or even during rear delt flies, then try to not wrap your thumb around the weight. This helps you not grip the weight so hard, so you use less of your forearm, and you will end up using and feeling your back muscles a lot more. And if you don't already have them, get wrist straps. These will help you actually hold the weight so that your grip isn't the thing that gives out and you'll be able to work and feel your back muscles a lot more.
