What's up, Believe Nation? It's Evan. My one word is believe, and I believe in people more than they believe in themselves. And my sincere hope is that if you believe in yourself as much as I believe in you, you'll be able to change the planet. So to help you on your journey today, we're gonna learn 9 surprising facts about Will Smith. Fact number 1: He believes he can become President of the United States if he wanted to.
A few months ago, I said that I believe that if I chose to, I could be the President of the United States. And I think, uh, as I've had a chance to intellectualize why I said that, and I think that there's a certain delusional quality that all successful people have to have. You have to believe that something different than what has happened for the last 50 million years of history, you have to believe that something different can happen. And I say to my friends all the time, and we, we laugh about it, I truly Honestly, as I sit here before you right now, as honestly as I can say it to you, I truly believe that I could be the president if I wanted to. And as bizarre as that may sound to people that have traveled the path before me and to people who actually know how difficult it is, foolish Will Smith honestly believes it.
Fact number 2: He knows how to solve the Rubik's Cube really quickly.
2 minutes. Okay, what do we got? What do we got? Okay, uh, 1 minute left. I know, right?
You said 2 minutes.
All right, maybe you pretend to be good. No, no, I'm I got it. I got it. It just takes a minute. It just takes a minute.
Yeah, that's the whole problem with the Olympics, kid.
It's fine. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!
We've got something here, man!
Almost. There you go. You took the moment for real.
I had to take it for real.
Fact number 3, he's part owner of the Philadelphia 76ers basketball team.
There is nothing like in all of entertainment than to walk into the building when it's announced that you're a part owner of your hometown basketball team.
I can't even.
Like, that is ridiculous. I mean, if the team doesn't win, it sucks later. Yeah, right, right. But that first initial, it's like, fantastic.
Fact number 4, he was the first hip-hop artist to be nominated for an Academy Award.
And you were nominated— were you nominated? Yep. What a great moment.
Best Actor.
But I read somewhere that you can't, because you lost it to Denzel Washington.
Well, no, you don't lose.
See, well, you didn't win it.
You didn't win it.
You can pretty up however you want, Will, but unless you take it home, you didn't win it.
You don't lose an Oscar once you're You're— I'm still the Academy Award nominee Will Smith. We're all winners.
No, no, no, you're not.
That's what they say at the Oscar lunch. It says it over. It says you're all already winners. You weren't there, Jonathan.
So Will, which of your fellow winners got to take the actual award home that year?
Denzel took it. Denzel took it.
And that was for— which one was that for?
It was, uh, Training Day.
Great film.
Yes, no, fantastic film.
But I read somewhere that you weren't— you kind of— I don't know whether you said you didn't feel ready, or at the same time, maybe you thought this wasn't your time yet.
When you can get nominated, you get invited to the party, it's huge. Yeah, big time. But I can always tell when things aren't right for me in my life at that time. I didn't feel like that was the time. But for Pursuit of Happiness, I actually felt like that was the time, and I still didn't win.
OK, go ahead.
I was like, hey, it's my time. Wait, hold on. That other boy taking my thing.
Yeah, but he didn't win it though.
Yeah, well, we were all winners once we got there. You're a double winner.
You just ain't had one yet.
You know, but I'm telling you, it really is one of those awards. It's like the show is so huge. The concept of it is so huge. It's wonderful to be invited to the big dance.
Fact number 5, he first met his wife-to-be, Jada Pinkett Smith, when she auditioned to be his girlfriend on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. You mentioned Will, who everybody knows who Will Smith is, but I heard you auditioned for Fresh Prince too.
I did.
As his girlfriend.
I did.
I auditioned as his girlfriend. I'll never forget. You know, he was, it's funny because he was there. That must have been his thing, you know, coming into the casting calls to see what, you know, young girls were coming up in there. You know what I'm saying? And so he's sitting in the, you know, out in the hallway. So I walk in, and you know, the casting director, she looks at me, and she says, you know, I'm doing my lines, and she said, you know what? You just, you're just too short for Will, but thank you for coming in. And I was like, all right. So I walked out, you know, and Will was like, hey shorty, let me talk to you. I was like, ain't nothing for us to talk about, homie. Already said, you ain't got a role for me.
Keep stepping.
But, and then over the years, you know, he finally, I did A Different World and then I did a couple of movies and then he wanna come, you know, fourth season, fifth season asking me to be his girlfriend again. You know, he came down to Winston-Salem while I was doing a movie called Inkwell.
Oh yeah.
And, um, he was like, you know, will you come and be a serious regular on Fresh Prince? And at that time I was like, I'm not trying to do television right now. And I'm glad that I said no because we probably wouldn't be married now.
Fact number 6: the film he most regrets making is Wild Wild West. It's too bad, I really like that movie.
Now, have you failed in the last 5 years, 10 years? I mean, you consider anything you've done a failure? Uh, yes. Oh, absolutely. Like what? Certain things. Um, because a movie didn't gross as much, is that failure? No, it's actually the, the, the converse with, with, uh, Wild Wild West. Yeah. Um, it felt like a failure because the, the film wasn't great, right? You know, but did $225 million. And you know what people said about that? They said that's because of Will Smith. It's not because— but I was like, oh, it hurts so bad. You know, it felt, it felt like, um It felt like I got what I wanted out of the deal, but my fans didn't get their half of the deal.
Fact number 7: He's the first rapper to win a Grammy Award.
And I kind of forget sometimes, because I think of you as a movie star, movie actor first and foremost. I forget, of course, this huge career beforehand, this big successful career as a rapper.
Yep.
Uh, did you— and you were the first rap act, I believe, to win the Grammy?
Yep, ever won a Grammy, 1988.
No one can ever take that out of the way. That's incredible.
That's it.
The only time it can be done.
Fact number 8, he speaks fluent Spanish.
I'm fluent in Spanish. Hola, mucho gusto. I'm fluent in French. Je suis désolé, mais pas autogramme. I'm fluent in Japanese. Konnichiwa, domo arigato, gozaimashita.
What do you think?
Let's say Spanish. That would be correct.
Well, para los latinos, ¿por qué todo el mundo debería de ver After Earth?
Oh, OK. La película basada 1,000 años En el futuro, y tengo miedo porque necesito practicar más mi español, pero la película tiene acción y efectos especiales, pero la película es de un padre y de un hijo, ¿cómo se dice? De sobre— ah, to survive.
Sobrevivir.
Sobrevivir, sí, gracias. Muchas gracias.
And fact number 9, he was chosen by People magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world.
When I go to theaters, when my movies come out, and I sit in the back, and I try to see how people are reacting— and there was a scene in Bad Boys when I was running with my shirt open. It was the first time in my life ever I heard a woman go, mm. And I was like, I didn't know what to do. I was like, what was that, miss? I don't even know. But it really is a strange thing to be to be considered. Like, when I think sex, I look at Denzel, and I was like, now that's a sexy man. Yeah. You know? But I just never thought of myself in that way. So it's fun.
