Put Your Boxing Gloves On: Fight for What You Believe In

Evan Carmichael and Madonna discuss fighting for what you believe in. Madonna talks about passion and persistence, while Carmichael shares how he battled agents and publishers to get his book idea accepted.
Good morning, Believe Nation! Today's message is put your boxing gloves on. Over to you, Madonna.
I think the best advice I can give anyone, male or female, is that, you know, You have to really believe in what you're doing. I think having a good job and having work is— it's hard to come by. And being able to do what you want to do with your life. So you have to be willing— first of all, you have to be really passionate about what you do and really believe in what you do, because there's going to be a lot of fights and battles and struggles along the way. So my best advice is to you really believe and love what you do. Because at the end of the day, nothing, you know, you always have to fight for things that are worth it. So put your boxing gloves on.
So obviously being Mr. Believe, this is a message that I resonate really well with. You have to love what you do. You've got to believe in it all the way and you've got to fight for I'm reminded about a story around my book. I'm writing a book right now, and when my agent first said, "You got to write a book," I wasn't all that interested in it. You know, I thought there were better priorities, and it was really because I wasn't super passionate about the topic that we were writing about. And then about a quarter of the way through that first book, I came up with an idea about the book that I wanted to write, and I loved it, and I believed in it, and I was excited by it, and I showed it to him, and he said, That's not a book. But I was convinced that it was, and I started writing it and showing him what I had in my head. So it wasn't just a concept, but I could give him proof. I could give him a demo. I could show him what I was talking about. He introduced me to a literary agent, and again, her first thoughts were, I like the first book idea better than the one you have in your mind. And so I had to show her even more. I had to show her a sample chapter. I was fighting for what I believed in to get to the point where I was convinced both my agents that what we had was a winning product. Then we started talking to publishers, and some publishers got it right away and said, "This is amazing, we love it, we want to partner with you." And a lot of the other ones said, "We don't get it. This isn't a book. This isn't ever going to do well." And so each step along the way, I had to fight for it. I had to fight for what I had in my head. And if you are chasing a dream that you love so much that you have to make it happen, you're going to get a lot of people telling you along the path that This isn't going to work out. You're crazy. You're stupid. There's no way this is going to happen for you. Fight for it. Put your boxing gloves on and show them. So my question of the day for you guys today is, what are you fighting for? What are you putting those boxing gloves on for? Leave it in the comments below. Thank you guys so much for watching. Have an amazing day. Continue to believe, and I'll see you again tomorrow morning for another shot. Of espresso.
