This Scientific Reports article (Mavros et al., 2022) reports a laboratory experiment using mobile EEG and electrodermal activity (EDA) to study how environment type (green, urban outdoor, urban indoor), social density (crowded vs uncrowded), and participant activity (walking vs standing on a treadmill) affect self-reported emotion, EEG indices (frontal alpha, frontal midline theta, theta/beta ratio, frontal alpha asymmetry) and EDA (SCL, ISCR). N=42 healthy young adults were assigned to walking (n=22) or standing (n=20) groups and watched 6 one-minute walk-through videos. Main findings: green scenes evoked more positive valence and lower arousal; outdoor urban scenes were rated more positively than indoor; crowded scenes increased self-reported arousal and negative valence and increased TBR and EDA, but in walking participants crowded scenes sometimes produced higher frontal alpha asymmetry (more approach/positive affect). Mobile EEG/EDA produced usable signals during walking after artifact processing (ASR/ICA), though walking increased physiological arousal and affected signal characteristics.
