Ayako lost 35-40 pounds after 50 and started running marathons, then ultras. Low-heart-rate training from the Extra Mileage podcast let her safely build mileage and run six days a week without injury. She went from marathons to 50-mile races.
You think it's too late to start running or improving your running? Meet Ayako.
I had to lose weight. I think I lost like 35 to 40 pounds. I went straight to a marathon that same year because they said it could be done, and I thought, wow, they're older than me, I should be able to do this.
Her game changer: low heart rate training.
I didn't know anything about low heart rate training, and really it wasn't until I saw your Extra Mileage podcast and I started listening to that, that it started to make a lot of sense to me. And I thought, you know, I'm going to really give this a try.
And I think that was the real start of my long journey to being able to run a 50-miler. She runs 6 days a week with her dog, no injuries, and she loves the process.
It can be done. If I did it, it can be done.
If you think you're too old or too slow to improve, this conversation will change your mind. Mm-hmm.
