Dr. Shefali describes the moment she realized she was about to repeat her own upbringing with her child. She argues that parents often treat children as extensions of themselves, unconsciously passing down beliefs about religion, sexuality, and race without questioning them. Only by healing your own wounds first can you choose which values actually serve your child.

And parents don't like when I say that because they feel like they own their children. So of course they're going to pass down their religion, their belief systems, their attitudes towards sexuality and race and everything. And when I ask parents to heal first, examine first, go on a journey first, they don't like it. They feel like they have every right to do whatever they want with their children. Even if they're passing down something toxic.
