Don’t try to get attention...

A speaker argues that authentic marketing means expressing your true self instead of chasing attention with formulas. Real connection happens when you stop performing and let your actual audience find you.
Don't try to get attention. Be yourself and see who shows up. This idea transformed the way I think about creating content, audience building. It's essentially authentic marketing, and it is opposite of, of what you learn out there when they teach you to get attention, whether you're getting attention on video by doing things that don't feel authentic and worthwhile to you. I literally saw a video coach said this, hey, at the beginning of a video, go like this. At the beginning of a video, go like this. So that in the first couple seconds, you get their attention right away, and. And then you can keep their attention. And then you also go, you know, you do things that, you know, visual interruption. And I mean, do that. If it feels authentically true for you and deeply joyful, sure, go for. Doesn't feel true for me. And I don't think it probably feels true for a lot of you here. Same thing with copywriting, right? Like, if you learn how to write marketing copy to sell your things or to build your audience, you're going to learn, oh, you got to say this at the beginning and then say that. This is why I've always shied away from copywriting formulas, headline formulas, formulas for getting attention. Essentially, I'm like, if I look at that, I'm like, well, it feels formulaic, literally. And if the formula isn't something that was generated from you, or if the formula wasn't like, oh, my God, I love doing that. I'm so glad someone crystallized what I already love to do, fine, wonderful, great. But if it's something that you have, like, okay, I can see how that gets attention. And even though it doesn't feel true to me, I'm going to stretch myself. Maybe it'll eventually feel true to me, but it gets people's attention. Like, it starts with external validation as the priority. And that's dangerous because then your marketing becomes a means to an end. And that's manipulation, right? Because you're like, I'm doing this so that I can get their attention, so then I can deliver my message and so I can build their trust so that I can get a customer. I mean, that makes sense, right? It sounds like a logical flow, doesn't it? But then you realize you haven't been living from your true self. And there's a question years ago that changed my life and really set me on the path of authenticity, which is a path that is truly sustainable and truly worthwhile as a way of living. Question was, if I only had six months left to live, how would I express myself? And I don't know why that question wouldn't let me go. And I. And I said if that was true, I got to stop doing most of the marketing that I'm doing because that's not worth my life. If I had six months left to live, I would every single day be doing whatever I can to express my soul. Because I don't want to die with that deep song left unsung. And I still need to experiment with what my soul's expression is. And so I started at that moment to say, I'm not going to do any more of the marketing shenanigans that I was being taught. And instead I'm going to see marketing itself has to be a worthwhile activity of soul's expression and connection with my soulmates. You, all those of you who are still watching this boring video are my soulmates, perhaps. And you also have a bunch of soulmates out there who are waiting for you to express yourself authentically without. And it's like you have to strip away the inauthentic attention getting tactics so that you have the room and the energy and the focus to express your soul. And so when I started doing that, I really came alive. That was really when my business came alive. I said, oh my gosh, why didn't anyone tell me before this point that marketing itself doesn't have to be a means to an end. It doesn't have to be a chore. It's not a chore. I mean, how can the practice of your soul's expression be a chore? What are you talking about? That's like itself, that's life. That's like true living. And so I said marketing is essentially the practice of my soul's virtues and my soul's expressions. Virtues, meaning I have to be courageous or I have to practice. What does it mean for me to be courageous today, to express myself real? What does it mean for me to be compassionate today, to really hold my ideal client, my soulmate client in my heart and to speak to them from the heart. What does that mean for me to do? How do I do that today? And so courage and love and truth and joy. Like the joy of liberating my soul no matter what happens. So this is the unattached and practicing unattachment, which is also a soul's virtue. Practicing an attachment of. I'm just going to put this out there. No matter what happens, no matter if not a single person sees this, not a single person likes it, not a single person decides to follow me or what setting all that aside, was this moment worthwhile for me? Yes. Was I trying to connect with my soulmate clients? When I try to connect with my soulmates to serve them? Yes. Okay, this moment was worthwhile. If I happen to drop dead tomorrow, I lived this day or this moment at least in a worthwhile way that became the way I did marketing and that changed everything. So I said I really can't stand attention getting tactics anymore when I see them formulaic things, headlines and video things. I have to make my video really interesting and special. Whatever. It's not worth my limited life. What is is the practice of expression and virtue and then see who shows up. If I show up consistently well I get more of a chance to be found by more people my more of my soulmate clients. It's not going to resonate with everyone but it resonates with the right people the people that are meant for me. So anyway, I hope this is encouraging in some way and thanks for joining me on this journey.
