This is a YouTube video titled "What images do you see!?" created on August 29, 2020, featuring Alexandra Johnson sharing a reflective and instructional monologue about noticing mental images associated with negative thoughts and how to stay present in the moment to reduce suffering. The content is a solo talk focused on mindfulness and emotional awareness techniques.
Hey, everyone, it's Alexandra. I hope you're having a great day. So today's video is what images do you see? And I noticed that I have a sunlight beam. We're just gonna take that as a good sign. Okay, so what images do you see? And I got this idea from Byron, Katie last year when I did a workshop with her. And essentially we think of thoughts that causes pain and suffering. And then she had us thinking about the images that come to mind. So when you think, you know, I'm not good enough, or you think I'm not smart enough, or you know, she's selfish or he's arrogant or whatever kind of thoughts cause suffering for you, and we have a variety of them, but just to notice. And then when you have that thought, notice the images that are playing in your mind. A lot of times we focus on the feelings and our needs, which is really great. I love that practice as well. But we bypass and overlook all of the images that are going through our head. And I find it so fascinating because if you stop once you notice your experience a little, you know, triggered or a little painful emotion, if you go back and you think, just look in your mind's eye, noticing what images are floating through your mind, you will notice that you immediately go back into the past or you go into the future. So you go back to all the times that you felt this before and those images just dance in your mind. Or you go to the future, like, wow, this is always going to be like this. And you imagine how bad it can get if this just keeps going the way that it is. So I think this is a really important practice. I love tuning into our emotions, but I also really like this to notice all of our beliefs that we have come with images. There's images that go in our mind. Some of them images are great and awesome and, you know, if it's a positive joy giving, life giving emotion, but with the negative ones, they're usually not super awesome images. And we catastrophize things and we make it worse than it is. So anytime that I notice that my images are going through the past or jumping into the future of what this means, I try to stop and come back to the moment of what's actually happening in this moment. Like what is really happening in this moment. This person said this, this person did this, you know, for my kids, my kid hit another hit my other kid, okay, I don't need to go into the future. And what that means, I can just stay where I am right now. And right now I'm focusing on this moment. Don't allow my mind to dance into the future and don't allow my mind to dance in the past with those images. Stay connected to this specific moment and how I'm feeling and how I want to navigate this moment. And I just think this is really powerful just to notice those images, even just notice them. Noticing them, we start to shift them because we realize we don't have to believe everything we think. We don't have to believe everything that we see. And a lot of times our minds images don't actually paint reality as it is. It just. It's our perspective and our judgments and all that. So this is just an idea to play with. I find it super helpful to notice the images. Try to catch them when you have those negative thoughts or beliefs that arise and see if you can just come back to the moment. Don't allow your mind to go to the past or to the future. Just staying with what is happening right in this moment. So I hope that was helpful. Let me know if this is something you already practice or this is a new idea for you. I hope that it's helpful. I know it's definitely helpful for me. So I'm sending you lots of love and blessings. Have a great one.
