What to do when you've gained some weight

Alexandra Johnson shares six approaches to weight gain, covering body image, eating habits, movement, and hormonal health. She draws on her own experience with weight fluctuations and recommends resources for self-care and body positivity.
Hey, it's Alexandra. Hope you're having a great day. So today's video is what to do when you've gained some weight. And if you hear some noise, I have my dog on my lap. So what to do when you gain some weight. I recently, as in like, three days ago, stepped on the scale, and I was just feeling a little heavy in my body, and I was curious what I weighed. So I got on the scale, and I realized I'd gained some weight. And I was like, huh, that's interesting. I haven't been at this weight in a while, like, since I was pregnant, and just interesting. So I kind of went through a process of re evaluating, just. Just feeling into my lifestyle and this extra lusciousness that I am now carrying. And. And first, I want to address the scales because I know that can be a really hot topic for many. And for me, there was a period where I was really into the scales and measuring my body weight, and I had this ideal body weight that I needed to be at, and I achieved it. And I thought life would be perfect when I got to that weight, and I would be beautiful and successful and everything would just be magical and easy. And when I realized is that those things have nothing to do with weight. Like, our weight does not determine how great our life is. We get to determine how great our life is and how we feel and what we choose to see and how we choose to live. So I had the rigorous I'm checking my weight, I'm checking my body fat, and was really attached to the scale. And then I went through a phase where I just said, you know, I am above the scale. And I threw my scale out, and I didn't want to look at numbers, and I didn't want to feel bad about my body. I just wanted to be in my body and own my body. And, yeah, just threw the scale out and just went through a phase where I was totally against weighing and not even. Not that much drama, but it was just, I'm just not gonna weigh myself. I just don't. I'm not. Not gonna do that. And now where I am is I'm pretty neutral. I don't. I don't have strong stories about the scale in a negative or positive way. I think the scale can be used to monitor and measure to see how your nutrition and your exercise and your lifestyle is treating you. And I also think it's great if you do get on the scale. It's a great way to notice any body image demons that you might have because when you step on the scale, when you step off of it, you have your number. What are the stories that go through your head? Like, what. What's there? And it's a great way to kind of filter those and turn those around and just see what some of those underlying beliefs are about your weight. So I like it for that. So you can choose to do, obviously, whatever you want to do. I just thought it'd be helpful for you, for me to share just my journey with the scale and weight. And currently I don't have, like an ideal weight. I know that I feel, I feel great in my body, probably around 145. I'm 5, almost 5, 10, 5, 9 and a half, I guess. And I'm athletic. Like, I got strong legs, I got a strong body. I've been an athlete for most of my life, so that feels like a good number for me. I've been as low as 135is probably the lowest the last 20 years. And that took a lot of work. And I just, I'm not committed to putting that much work and attention into being at a certain weight. And I didn't feel that much different when I was 145 or 135. So when I got on the scale, I was 156. And the. I kind of went through a process, which I share with you, of kind of just six things that I worked through after I got on the scale. And I thought it might be helpful for you. And the first one is realizing that it's normal to fluctuate. And our bodies are meant to fluctuate. We have menstrual cycles and hormones and things that are just up and down and around and expansive and juicy. And we just got a lot of succulents in our bodies. And that can mean up and down weights, a few pounds in a few days, which isn't. Don't, don't get stressed about that. And also to really embrace your feminine body, I think that sometimes we don't embrace it. And the reality is we can carry babies inside of our uterus. We expand and we grow, and then we give birth and expand to these little human beings, which is amazing. Which is amazing. So honoring that, that we are here to grow and to expand, and that may mean a little extra, you know, a little love handle, a little extra cushion on the butt. And it's just. It's just not that big of a deal. And it's beautiful. It can be beautiful if you feel really great in your body and you have a Little bit of extra weight, and you feel energetic and you feel vibrant, and that's fine. Just own it and rock it and just say, this is. This is my body, and I'm owning it. I'm owning my lusciousness. I'm owning my voluptuousness, and I feel good. Amen. Right? And if you're not feeling that, then this video is. You can. This is where I was. I was like, huh, okay, I'm down with Onan with my little extra, extra goodness, but I don't feel super energetic and vibrant, and I know that losing a little bit of weight and just tighten things up a little bit will make me feel better. So that was number one. Where was number oh? Number two is, how's your body image story? So really checking in, like, once you weigh yourself and how is your body image? Like, what is your body image? Where. Where are your thoughts going? What are your thoughts about your body? And realizing that they're just numbers. Like, take the personal drama story about it and the story that you have about yourself. And for me, I. The story that came up was, oh, I just don't have enough willpower. And, you know, I just eat too much. And I just had things like that. And I said, ho, ho, ho, hold up. And I just noticed that I was feeling a little down on myself. I said, I'm not gonna do that. My body is doing the best that she can do, and she's giving me signals. She's letting me know that maybe what I'm doing isn't working for me. And it has nothing to do with my body. Hating my body, that's not gonna get me anywhere. That's just gonna make me eat more. If you're hating on your body, you're gonna feel crappy and you're gonna want to eat more, and then. And then you're gonna gain more weight. So cut the body image crap. Don't believe the negative voices and the negative stories. And that's number two. Number three is, are you eating when you're hungry? This was my thought. I'm like, huh? I've noticed that I have been. I have a toddler, so he eats all the time. And I just noticed that I've been eating more and not when I'm hungry. Like, I'm just kind of munching and snacking because the food is there, not because I'm actually hungry. So that's a continuous process for me of eating when I'm hungry and just checking in with my body and saying, are you hungry? Okay. Let's eat. What does my body want right now? And then eating and then not eating again until I'm hungry. So I just noticed that I was just not honoring that as much as I could. So again, no drama, just making a commitment to myself. I will eat when I'm hungry. Okay, perfect. Then the number four. How's your movement? I realized that I. That I wasn't walking as much. I used to walk more with my son, and I stopped walking. And also I hadn't been doing as much high intensity interval training, which I really love, being the athlete that I am. And I just made a commitment to start doing that again. And I knew that I would feel better in my body. I would feel more energetic, I'd feel more vibrant and probably get down in my body weight. So checking in with, okay, are you moving as much as your body needs to move? Like, learn your body and know what your bot. What makes your body feel good and then be committed to doing it. So I committed to doing more high intensity training sessions, and I've been doing that this week. It's amazing. I did sprints, I've done strength training, and I'm just. I'm just in heaven. I personally love that kind of training, and it feels really, really good for me. So I'm happy about that. So the next question is, how do you want to feel and how do you want to feel in your body? So for me, it was, I want to feel energetic, I want to feel beautiful, I want to feel radiant, I want to feel happy, I want to feel like I'm flourishing. I want to feel good, I want to feel positive, I want to feel creative, I want to feel on fire. Hashtag boom. So how do you want to feel? How do you want to feel in your body regardless of what you weigh? So I just did some journaling about things that I. The ways that I wanted to feel and choosing to feel those things and looking at some exercises and foods and things that help me feel those ways. And then number six is kind of. We talked about it at the beginning. But what, like, where is your body love? Where is your relationship with your body? Don't use this time that you have extra weight as a way to berate yourself and to criticize yourself, because that's not what your body needs. Your body needs some extra love. That's what she needs. So just slow down. Give yourself some more space to nourish your body, to nourish your mind. Just relax and know that as I sing to my son all the time, every Little thing is gonna be alright. Don't worry about a thing. Cause every little thing is gonna be alright. So just sing that to yourself. Don't worry, sweetie. Everything is gonna be alright. Love your body. It's all good. It is all good. And your body is just giving you messages and you just need to learn to uncover those messages. What is your body trying to tell you? Because she's doing the best that she can. Trust me. She is doing the best that she can and she's trying to optimize, help you optimize and feel as good as you can and be as radiant and energetic as possible. You just need to listen. So those are the six points. It's normal to fluctuate. How's your body image story? Are you eating when you're hungry? How's your movement? How do you want to feel? And where is the body? Love. So there's a few other things and then I'll wrap this up. I knew it was going to be a longer video. So if you stayed with me. Thank you. And there's hormonal issues as well. So I have some resources that I'm currently working with and I will share them with you because I just did some thyroid tests and my thyroid was okay, but just not super great. So looking at that, an adrenal test, Adrenals weren't thriving as well as they could. And just looking at my hormonal panel and just trying to optimize my hormones more because that has a huge impact on your weight and your energy. So. So the first book I have is the Hormone Cure by Sarah Gottfried. That's a great one. She also has, which I have on Kindle, the Hormone Reset, which I really like that book. And then there is the woman Code, Alyssa Vitti, and I love her book and she just talks about syncing life up with your cycles. And it's a really beautiful, inspiring, empowering, practical book. And then the Adrenal Reset Diet from Alan Christensen and he. I'm working with him on my thyroid and my adrenals, so I highly recommend him. And then I just got these. Marcel, pick. Is it me or my adrenals? Is it me or my hormones? And then I have another book by Frank Lippman called Revive, which is a great book on adrenal health. So if you're thinking adrenals, thyroids, hormones, something is out of whack. Those are hopefully some good resources for you to look into to help you optimize even more. So that's it for today. I'm sending you lots and lots of love, big hugs and sending your extra lusciousness. So some extra loving. That's right. Do something special for yourself today because you gained some weight. All right, my awesome peeps. I hope you have a good one, and I will talk to you soon.
