This is the BOSS Lifecycle. It's the map you'll use to track your company's progress from start to finish, but more importantly, to make proactive, data-driven operational decisions. The BOSS Lifecycle has 6 phases: Vision, Product, Revenue, Go-to-Market, Growth, and Optimization. The timeline to complete the journey from Vision through Exit is roughly 3 to 5 years. But every entrepreneur's timeline will vary slightly. In each phase, your goal is to achieve a validation benchmark, such as a metric or tangible output, prior to continuing your journey. Depending on your company's financial resources, you may need to secure investor funding before entering the next phase. The BOSS Lifecycle Journey starts by setting your strategic vision in the North Star document. This is like putting your final destination in a GPS. The North Star helps you avoid roadblocks and plots the most efficient path to achieving your goals. You'll start with the end in mind by identifying who may acquire your company and what metrics they value. Then you'll work your way back to your ideal customer, product features, and marketing strategy. With a validated North Star, companies move to the product phase where they'll produce a minimum viable product and confirm that a user in their target market wants to purchase that product. With a validated product, companies proceed to the revenue phase. In the revenue phase, you'll prove that a sample of your target market will pay for your product. The revenue phase is about making that first dollar. Now we move to the go-to-market phase, where you'll reach your financial break-even point by growing and retaining customers in your target market. Now companies enter the growth phase. In the growth phase, we'll balance the cost required to gain customers with the revenue received from each customer. Growth phase validation is achieving sustainable growth in your target market and aligning your company to an ideal acquirer. Now you'll enter your company's final stage, optimization. Optimization is about scaling profitability by refining marketing, product sustainment, and service delivery while growing and retaining your customer base. You'll streamline processes, right-size functional areas, and improve metrics, all while minimizing costs. Optimization maximizes your company's value as you prepare for exit. Your BOSS journey awaits.
