Most of us learned to love the way we were loved, and we didn't make any changes, shifts, or updates. This means most of us are doing our very best with a template that we didn't choose. Maybe love in your family looked like showing up. Providing, keeping the lights on and the refrigerator full. Maybe it looked like tough conversations nobody wanted to have. Maybe it was quiet, present, but not demonstrative. That love was real. I'm not asking you to dismiss it, nor am I asking you to analyze it, at least not today, because here is what I want you to sit with today. Your kid is not you. They didn't grow up in your childhood. They're living in a different moment with a different nervous system, with different needs for how love has to sound and feel to get through, to be felt, to be known. And the gap between how you love and how they receive it, that gap is not a failure. It's just a distance Worth closing. The shift from loving someone to demonstrating love in a way that they can feel. That's not a grand gesture. It's not a speech or a letter or a family meeting. It's usually something much smaller, a sentence, a question, a moment where you choose to stay in the room instead of changing the subject. Small, consistent, and real. That's what changes things. So here is your butterfly effect for this very tender topic. Start with the word of the week: demonstrate. Tuck this word into your pocket this week and let it show up when you need a nudge. Demonstrate, not feel more, Not love harder. You're already doing that. Demonstrate. Love that lives only inside you is invisible to the person who needs it most. Demonstration is how love becomes evidence. It's how your kid stops wondering and starts knowing. So this week, when you feel the love and don't say it, when you think the proud thought and keep it to yourself, When you want to ask but talk yourself out of it, ask yourself, how can I demonstrate this right now? Not perfectly, just visibly. Your tiny action this week is this: say one specific thing to your child that includes who they actually are. Not "I love you" at the end of a phone call. That absolutely matters. Keep doing that, but something more specific, something that names them. It might sound like, I was thinking about you today and I just want you to know I'm really proud of the person you are. Or I want to hear more about something that's going on with them, whether it's the person they're dating. The community they're part of, something that they're studying in school, or something that you know that they're excited about. It even works to just say, "I see you." One sentence, specific, true. That's it. That's the action. Let it be small. Don't overcomplicate it. Small is how ripples start. Your micro rebellion this week is this: I will not wait until I feel ready to demonstrate my love. I will not wait until I feel ready to demonstrate my love. Because here's the truth: ready is a myth. There is no perfect moment where the words feel easy and the timing is right and nobody is distracted and nothing is awkward. There's only right now. This ordinary Friday. This car ride. This text you almost sent and then didn't. Love demonstrated imperfectly is still love received. So if the voice in your head says, "Not now, it'll be weird. They'll know. I'll just do it later." Meet that thought with this: later is not guaranteed. Now is what I have. Here's your line for the week. Write it down if that's your thing. Say it out loud if you need to hear it. Love is not what I feel. It's what they get to feel because of me. Love is not what I feel. It's what they get to feel because of me. When you wonder if your kid knows, when you replay a moment and wish you'd said something, when you feel the love so strongly but can't find the words, come back to that line. You're not trying to be perfect. You are trying to be present, and present is enough.
