Ever rate people's attractiveness out of 10. Like she's a seven, he's a six. Well, two guys doing just that 24 years ago inspired a lot of the Internet. So in the year 2000, engineering grads James and Jim created Hot or Not. It was a site to rate people out of 10. It went mega viral and earned 4 million a year by 2003. The craziest part is how it influenced YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and even Google Maps. YouTube started as a dating site that was trying to do a video version of Hot or Not Facebook. Facebook started as Mashup, which was a more direct copycat. And when James and Jim offered free server hosting for startups, Twitter used it while they got off the ground and Zipdash used it before Google acquired them to create maps. Hot or not also pioneered other Internet features that we all know today, like uploading photos, matching with dates, and using moderators to keep sites cleaning.
