David Kessler debates assisted suicide following a Supreme Court decision, arguing about the medical profession's role in treating pain and suffering. The conversation examines whether doctors should help end life or focus on better pain management.
Live from.
Washington. Crossfire.
There's no doubt that many people are dying or in despair. They're down. There's periods of depression. You've seen it. You're very familiar with it. You've written about it. What I want to know is how in heaven's name, you thought the Supreme Court was going to license doctors, because of this bad situation, to go in and kill people.
Well, I understand, and I'm certainly not surprised by today's decision. I didn't really expect them to go the other way. One of the things that I think think this is, no matter which way we go, is a wake up call to the medical profession to let people know we are not dying. Well in America, we are not addressing people's pain and addressing their suffering. And by no means in a civilized society should we advocate suicide.
