Short YouTube monologue by Kyle Balmer responding to a Reddit post arguing that no business can be 100% risk-free. The speaker explains that guaranteed success implies zero risk, which removes excess returns because competitors will enter and drive profits to zero; entrepreneurs accept risk to obtain rewards and must be comfortable with uncertainty.

What business can be 100% successful? There is no such thing. I just saw this post over on Reddit and I thought it's worth discussing because it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how business works. Basically, if a business venture is guaranteed to be 100% successful, that means that there is zero percent risk. And if there is no risk, there is no return. There's no such thing as a free lunch. The reason this happens is that if there is temporarily zero risk for a business, then other competitors, other people are going to enter that market and start doing the same thing. And as soon as that happens, the returns, the profit, is going to reduce to zero because people are going to keep piling into that market until there is basically no excess return. The reason we can make a profit in business is because there is a risk involved. It sounds counterintuitive, but that's why entrepreneurs do well. Because there's a risk. There's also a reward. If there was no risk, there'd be no reward. And this is fundamentally why entrepreneurs and business owners need to be okay with the idea of risk and uncertainty.
