Everyone's talking about AI being the next big wave, and I keep hearing the same thing: 'I'm going

Kyle Balmer warns against quitting your job to chase AI startups. Instead, build AI skills inside your current company: create prompt libraries, train teams, and use real projects as a testing ground. You'll gain experience, earn promotions, and be better positioned to start something later.

I'm seeing people leave 100k jobs to go and start AI companies, and I don't think that's necessarily the right way. These are people who are making good six figure salaries, but they're seeing people outside the corporate world who are making that kind of money by building AI tools. Which means there's a bit of a gold rush effect right now with people jumping over to what seems to be the hot new thing, and that's understandable. However, there might be a smarter way. The biggest opportunity might actually be right where you are now in your job. If you think about it, your existing company probably has problems that they need solving. They have no clear AI strategy and they have budget, they have cash to spend on this. This opens up the door for you to become a champion, basically an evangelist of AI within your existing company. And it also gives you a safe training ground for building something. If you can master AI implementation within your current company, building up prompt libraries, training teams, helping the company get on board with AI, then you can either get promotion within your own company, or you can use it as a testing ground for spinning out your own company later. Then if and when you do start your own thing, you won't be starting from zero because you've already got a project under your belt with results. It's kind of a win win whether you stay or not. So instead of jumping ship immediately, I think it's more sensible to build within your own company, build up your AI chops and then either get promotions or spin off your own thing. Once you have the experience building within an existing corporation.
