Kyle Balmer explains Google's decision to bring back its AI Overview feature in search after pausing it. He argues Google has reversed course on AI-generated content and may lack reliable detection tools, raising questions about how this shift affects Google's indexing business and ad revenue.

Do you remember when Google asked you to eat one small rock a day? Well, Google Overview is back. After taking down Overview for a month or so, Google have now reinstated it and it sits prominently at the top of a Google search now. But remember when just about two years ago, they said that AI content was against Google's rules? Well, they've obviously changed their mind. Here is an AI overview of Google telling me that they don't mind AI content. This is very much a case of if you can't beat them, join them. And it suggests that Google has not managed to work out an algorithm that can reliably detect AI content content. So instead of trying to detect and filter our AI content and maintain the integrity of Google search, just join the other team and use generative AI in order to give answers to people's questions. Here's the thing, though. This undermines Google, previously their economic moat. What kept them protected and profitable was the fact that they had indexed the world's information into a search engine. That's where 80% of their revenue comes from ads on search. It looks like they've realized that model is now dead and they're switching sites.
