Is AI a bubble? Paul Graham says nay

Paul Graham argues AI isn't a bubble, pointing to ChatGPT's rapid adoption as proof the technology is real. He contrasts it with failed hypes like the metaverse and Web3, comparing today to the dot-com era when most companies died but the internet survived.

Is AI just a bubble waiting to burst? So I just saw this tweet from Paul Graham. He's the co founder of Y Combinator and has been investing in startups for decades. This tweet says, I was just talking to a friend who's been investing in startups for about 20 years and we both agreed that one of the weirdest things about the AI boom is seeing journalists writing their usual contrarian stories about how it's a bubble about to burst. I'm 100% with him on this. There have been techs in recent years like the metaverse, Web3 Internet of Things, which have been technologies looking for a use case. Nobody actually wanted them. AI is totally different, especially things like ChatGPT, where we're seeing this groundswell of normal everyday people using it and wanting to use this technology. He goes on to say, for sure there are going to be individual companies that tank and branches of research that fail. There always are. But this thing is real. If anything, alarmingly real. Just like in 2001 when we had the dot com boom, a lot of companies went bust, but what we were left with at the end was the Internet. Just because there are excesses does not mean that the underlying technology is not valuable.
