A single-speaker YouTube opinion arguing that generative AI (notably OpenAI/ChatGPT) will displace traditional web search, predicting a paradigm shift away from search engines and claiming Google is effectively 'already dead' because ~80% of its revenue comes from search.

I think Google might be dead. They just don't know it yet. OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, are thought to be announcing their own search engine on Monday. Now, right now, 80% of Google's revenue comes from search. It doesn't come from selling telephones or running Gmail or anything like that. That's all additions to their search engine revenue, which is 80%. What we're seeing at the moment, though, is a paradigm shift in how we as humans access information. We've seen this before. We used to go to the library to look things up until the Internet came along and we start to use search engines to access the world's information. What might be seeing over the next few years is a similar shift away from search engines, where we look at existing information that is built on websites, to using generative AI results. Already, the search engines are building generative AI into the engine, and this new venture from OpenAI with a ChatGPT search engine is building on that same principle. But more likely, in the next couple of years, we're just going to see search engines die. There's going to be no need for them if we have good enough AI. And this means that Google is dead already. They just don't know it.
