A short opinion video by Kyle Balmer arguing that while many schools ban AI for students, the common calculator analogy is inadequate. The speaker contends AI is a transformational paradigm shift—comparable to the steam engine, electricity, or the Internet—and calls for nuanced institutional discussion and policy-making.

A lot of schools are banning their students from using AI, but should students be allowed to use artificial intelligence? So one argument that I see quite a lot is this one here. One analogy that I see used quite a lot is calculators. At certain levels of mathematics, you're not allowed to use calculators in examinations because it's all about the mental processing. And like this comment is rightly pointing out, why are we making life harder than it needs to be? Because we all have calculators in daily life. We have telephones. I absolutely agree with this. When it comes to calculators, however, artificial intelligence is actually a bigger shift. It's not just a tool, it's a whole paradigm. I would say that as a technology, AI is on on the same level of something like the steam engine, electricity or the Internet. It's not just an improvement like the calculator is on the abacus, but it's a transformational technology. I 100% agree that educational institutions need to work out what they're doing with AI. They need to have this conversation. But it's a bit more complex than this calculator example.
