Kyle Balmer explains AGI as artificial intelligence matching human-level intelligence across general tasks, unlike today's narrow AI built for single purposes. OpenAI and other companies are racing toward it, which is why concerns about OpenAI cutting safety teams matter.

What is AGI or Artificial General Intelligence? So I just shot a video about OpenAI disbanding their safety teams and I was saying that this is a bit worrying because they're probably going to be the first to get to AGI. And I got a question. Well, what is AGI? Basically, when we talk about artificial intelligence, we tend to talk about three different categories. We have ani, that is an artificial narrow intelligence. Basically, that is an artificial intelligence that has been designed for certain purposes and it's really good at doing that. One purpose. This is where we are in our current development of AIs. Above that we have something called an artificial General intelligence. There are many definitions for this, but a good one is that it has the same intelligence as the median human and it can be applied generally to any task and it will be able to work it out. So we don't need to program it specifically to do one thing. This is what we are currently working towards. Above, that is an artificial superintelligence which has the same intelligence as all of the humans on Earth put together. That one is a bit more sci fi, but we may get there one day.
