A brief transcript excerpt from a Girl Starter judging session featuring judges Tiffany Pham and Stephen Shapiro. The judges evaluate contestant ideas, focusing on how innovative they are, whether they solve real problems (avoid solution-chasing), how defensible the ideas are against copying, and the importance of brand when legal protection is unlikely. Shapiro also asks for clearer business models and expresses a personal bias against apps as default business plans. The clip ends as the judges prepare for the first team presentation.

I'd like to introduce you to the two guest judges and mentors who will be giving their initial impressions on your ideas. Tiffany Pham and Steven Shapiro.
I think some of the things we're going to be looking at is how innovative is your idea? Is it different? Are you sort of building on the ideas of others? What are you going to do to stand out from the competition?
What if we added some element to it that our potential competitors don't have?
I feel like this is a solution, chasing a problem, and just because somebody hasn't done it before doesn't mean you should. There might actually be a good reason. Nobody's done it before.
That is true.
So you need to just start thinking through these things.
Steven loved the idea. He thought it was very innovative, but he was a little bit concerned about what's going to prevent someone from copying this idea.
And so what's going to become most important for you is brand. Something like this is easy for somebody to replicate. You're not going to patent it, you're not going to protect it. So your brand is going to be what becomes most important.
Well, we're finally at the moment of truth. So the girls have been working on their presentations all night. I'm sure most of them are running on zero sleep right now. So are you ready for the first team?
I am. You know, for me, I still want to know a little more about the business model. How are they going to make money? And I have a personal bias against apps as a business, just because that seems to be everybody's default and everybody's business in terms of how they're going to go about creating a new business.
Well, I think we know who won and who needs to go home, so I'll call the girls in shortly, okay?
