Jackson Digney explains when slab insulation makes sense for a home. Building codes require it for underfloor heating, and Passive House certification mandates it under and around the slab. Beyond those, it improves winter performance and addresses thermal challenges on demanding sites.

What is slab insulation and when should you consider it? Slab insulation doesn't come up much in most builds, and it's not something we push for every home, but in the right situations it can make a noticeable difference to the comfort and performance. If you're doing underfloor heating, for example, slab edge insulation is required by the building code, and if you're aiming for a certified Passive House, insulation under and around the slab isn't optional. It's a key part of how the whole system works. Even outside Outside of those scenarios, it can be worth considering if you want better winter performance, you're working on a high-performance design, or you're building on a site that's exposed or has specific thermal concerns. It's one of those quiet details that doesn't cost a fortune but can make a home feel more consistent and comfortable, especially on cold mornings. At Enduro, we talk through slab insulation as part of the overall design conversation. We don't include it by default, but we don't ignore it either. If it makes sense for your home, we'll show you why, and if it doesn't, we'll explain that too. It's not about adding extras, it's about understanding where the value is.
