James Sinclair (YouTube, Apr 2, 2024) tells startup founders that treating fundraising as the next milestone is the wrong move. He gives two core reasons—lack of proof you can execute with investor money and lack of a built product—and urges founders to focus on building tangible artifacts (wireframes, mockups, diagrams) to demonstrate capability before seeking funds.

If you're a founder and you think your next milestone is raising money for your startup, or, you know, building out the pitch deck and starting to take on a roadshow and cold email investors, I got really fantastic news for you. It's not going to work. You're not going to get the money, and you're not going to get money for two core reasons. Number one is you've got no proof of any kind that if someone gives you money, you are capable of executing with it. And the second is you haven't built anything. This shows that you're capable of actually building something. So you've really done nothing to prove that you're worthy of taking someone else's money. And that's the good news. And so instead of focusing your next milestone on this belief that you need to fundraise and get out to market and get money so that you can build this thing, your next milestone should be building your business. Go build something, start somewhere, take it to the next step. Show me the wireframe, show me the diagram, show me the imagery, show me the mock up, show me something.
