Welcome back to the Lead On Purpose podcast. It's that time when I drop the key leadership highlights from our previous full length episode. We had Brianne west on the show. She's the founder and CEO of Ethique and an ethical beauty brand. Brianne started by making just 50 shampoo bars each day in her garage. She now makes 150,000 each day. She has some massive ambitions. She's donated over $2 million to environmental causes. Look, I want to share with you three or four amazing takeaways from our conversation. So grab a pen and paper and try to implement these into your own life and family, business and leadership. Before we jump in, I'd love to ask you to do me a massive favor. Please take 30 seconds to give me a rating and review. Whether you're listening on Apple Podcasts or on Spotify, it really helps me to impact more leaders. My mission is to help transform humanity one leader at a time, one conversation at a time. So look, first key takeaway. Number one, you've got to develop grit through overcoming challenges. Look, Brianne's a fighter. She's passionate, she's fiery and she knows what she's about and she has not been handed everything on a plate. And you know, for you, I think you were probably listening to this going, hey, that's the same for me. I've had challenges, I've had to fight for things. I haven't been given everything on a silver spoon. And that's great. That's how you develop grit. It's facing those challenges head on, seeking the resources and help that you need to get through it and learning lessons along the way. That's why, you know, the cold shower thing might seem like funny and gimmicky, but actually you develop grit by having a daily cold shower. Even if it's 15 seconds of cold shower at the end of your warm shower, that puts you in a position of discomfort and that helps you to develop that grit. Number two, everything has an impact. Make sure your impact is a good one, not a bad one, Right? So just remember that absolutely everything has an impact. Now how do you make sure that your impact is a good one, not a bad one? Well, if we think of the environment, it's through choices, right? Do you go out and buy, let's take Brianne in this case. Do you go out and buy your shampoo and your soap and stuff in a plastic bottle with a pump on it or do you go and buy Etique products that are solid bars that when you rub them in your hair they lather up even better than regular shampoo? Do you, you know, what's your approach? But everything you do has an impact and that could be a conversation with a colleague, conversation with a loved one. The way in which you have that conversation has an impact, good or bad. So my challenge is for you today to think about how you interact with others. Interact with your loved ones, interact with your staff, interact with your boss. How are you interacting with that individual? If you are the boss, then you're going to have lots of interactions with people that report to you. So let's make your impact a good impact. Third big takeaway was purpose led brands engender more loyalty because people feel better about their purchasing decisions. Now look, Brianne is saying this through data, you know, the stats prove it. Her brand is all centered around her purpose of helping regenerate the planet through business. So if you don't have a strong purpose led brand, that's something I'm going to challenge you to think about today and take action on this month. You know, what can you do to have more of a purpose led brand? My purpose is to help transform humanity one leader at a time. What is your purpose?
Look, before I share the last takeaway, I just wanted to let you know that I'm bringing HPL to Christchurch, New Zealand. So high performance leadership. I'm doing a full day intensive on 10 June 2022 at the Ilex. I'm also bringing in former world champion rugby player Kieran Reed as my guest. It's going to be an epic day. If any of you would like to know more about it or come along and join in, it's going to be a full day working through the full framework of high performance leadership. Just go to my website jjlochlan.com and you can check it out there. So last big takeaway culture starts at the top. Deep caring for your team creates deep connection. And isn't it so true when you've got a CEO, a leader, a managing director, someone who really does actually care about the staff, asks about their family, gives them the time off, gives them extra time off to, say, for bereavement leave or for sick leave. You know, really acknowledges them for the work that they do. Gives them space when they need it, gives them extra resources when they require it. But culture really does start at the top. And it doesn't start with a piece of paper. It doesn't start with an event. It starts with the leaders at the top saying, hey, this is who we are, and this is how we're going to carry ourselves. This is how we're going to treat each other. So what is the culture like in your company? Is it phenomenal? Is it euphoric? Is it the best culture you've ever been a part of? Or is there room for improvement? My challenge to you is, if you're running the company, what can you do to improve the culture? And if you're not running the company, what can you do to enhance that culture that's already happening. What can you do with your colleague, with someone else around you to really support a really harmonious culture? So those were the four big takeaways. I hope you get a chance to go and listen to the full episode if you haven't had a chance, but wishing you guys an amazing day ahead and get out there and lead life on purpose.
