Brooke Roberts Recap: Removing Wealth Barriers
25 Oct 2022 · 3 min
Host James Laughlin provides a recap of his conversation with Brooke Roberts, co-founder of Sharesies, interleaved with promotions (a free copy of Habits of High Performers, a 2026 goal-setting workshop, and the High Performers Club) and a sponsored endorsement for Flow State mushroom blends (lion's mane, PM blend) with third-party testing claims and a 15% coupon code. Roberts' background is summarized (co-founded Sharesies in 2017; grew up in Auckland, Mount Maunganui, and the U.S.; joint winner of a 2020 New Zealand Women of Influence Award). Core takeaways highlighted: the "rising tides lift all boats" notion (focus on one high-leverage area), the benefits of long-term investing and compound interest, founders' prioritization of personal growth and leadership development ("leadership lid"), and a strong call-to-action to stop procrastinating: "whatever you're putting off, do it now." The episode ends with invites to engage on socials and upcoming events.

How much time do you invest in your brain? Well, look, our brain dictates so many things. It's our largest asset. We've got to look after it, right? But often we're putting things on our skin and we're doing all these other things that care for our bodies, but our brain dictates so much. I came across a product a while ago called Flow State and it's made such a difference. And look, they offer functional mushrooms that sharpen cognition, they really boost energy and definitely strengthen immunity. And they actually use one of their key ingredients is lion's mane. Right? So Lion's mane is popular among really peak performing athletes and those wanting an edge. It's known as the brain mushroom and it's currently being studied extensively for its nerve growth factor potential as a means to ease the symptoms of Alzheimer's and for treating inflammation in the body. The thing I love about these products, they don't taste like mushrooms. You can mix them in with your tea, they're a great replacement for coffee. But I actually love the PM mushroom blend, the evening one. It really helps me sleep and to know that my brain is getting extra nutrients is just next level. The one thing that's really important for me is hey, what' in there? So they have tested heavily at Hill Laboratories for heavy metals, pesticide residue, microbials, and also at Massey University for active compounds. So I urge you, if you love your brain and you want to go the extra mile to nurture it, head on over to Flowstate NZ and you can use the coupon code LEADONPURPOSE to get 15% off.
Brooke Roberts is a New Zealand entrepreneur and businesswoman. She is a co founder of the micro investing platform Sharesies. Roberts was the joint Winner of the 2020 New Zealand Women of E Influence Award in the Business section. She grew up in Auckland, Mount Maunganui and the United States. In 2017, Roberts and six others co founded Sharesies as an investment platform for New Zealanders. Now over half a million people are using sharesys in Aotearoa and Australia. They're continuing to break down the barriers to investing for more Kiwis and create new ways to to help people develop their wealth. Look, please do go back and listen to our full episode. There were so many great insights, way too many for me to recap them all. But as always, I want to take a few of the key concepts that Brooke shared and share them with you. And I hope that one of them lands beautifully with you today in your life or in your business that you can apply or you can share with someone else. First things first. Rising tides lift all boats. Isn't that the truth? In Brook's words, anytime they start to work on one key aspect of their life or business, it seems to improve every other area. So what does that mean for you? Well, look, in this case with sharesys, it's about investing over the long term and letting compound interest do its thing. And as you put more in and compound interest does its thing, everything rises. What does that mean for you? What are you doing right now to protect your future? What are you doing now to invest in next decade, in 30 years out? Or what are you doing to your health right now that helps? As your health rises and improves, so does your mental health, so does your financial health, so does your relationship health. What's the one area right now, this month that you'd like to really focus on? Because when you focus on one area, inevitably all other areas benefit from that. When I spoke with Greg Creed a number of months ago, he was the CEO of kfc, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and Yum Brands over in America. And he said, like when he took over Taco Bell, he said, the one metric I want to be obsessed over is a full taco. Yes, you heard me right, a full taco. And he was challenged on this saying, you're crazy. That's nuts. The company's going to suffer. We've got to focus on all of this, 50 things, all these other metrics. He said, no, I want one obsession metric. And he wanted to get that Taco, and I think it was in the 60 percentile. It was full, like 60% full. He wanted to get it as close to 100% full so that when someone comes to Taco Bell, they get a full taco. Simple, right? So that he did that for a number of months, and they got it up by like 20 something percent. More taco filling. And then they started to look at all the other areas that they weren't focused on. But surprisingly, all those other areas had improved as well. Rising tides lift all boats. Where in your life is the one thing that needs your most attention that might impact the things around you? Look, Brooke talked about, as leaders, they try to grow themselves before they grow their business. And the founders all have coaches and they do ongoing personal growth trainings and seminars. To me, that's not usual. In fact, it's highly unusual. Often people are not investing in their own growth, and it's very passive and hopeful. But Brooke and her founding team of leaders are really intentional about getting ahead of the curve, about growing their capabilities, growing their leadership lid. We've all got a capability leadership lid. And if we don't improve our growth and our knowledge and our vision and our abilities to lead, we will attract people underneath our capability level. So if you're a 7 out of 10, you're only ever going to attract sixes, fives, fours, and threes. But if you're a 9, then you get to attract some eights and maybe a 9. If you're a 10, you're going to maybe be attracting nines and eights. Isn't your team just going to be so much better and your impact on everyone around you going to be so much greater? What are you doing to grow your leadership? What's your personal growth plan? Do you have one? If you don't, that's going to be one of the greatest investments you can make for 2023 is get yourself a personal growth plan. If you don't know what that looks like, please contact me or my team or get on socials and tag me and say, hey, I'm committed to a growth plan. What is it? I want to help you, and I want you to spread that with your friends, your family, your loved ones. When we've got a personal growth plan, we have the ability to help others, because you cannot give what you do not have. So the more we learn, the more we have to impart. Look, the one last thing I want to share with you, the big takeaway is this. And to me, this is really powerful. Brook said, whatever you're putting off, do it now. I'm going to repeat that. Whatever you are putting off, do it now. Get it out of the way, move forward, execute on it. Take action.
Because in that forward movement, that's where the learning is, that's where the growth is. That's where the impact is. That's where the joy is. Don't procrastinate. Don't be indecisive. Take action. Whatever you're putting off today, go do it now. And if you do something that you've been putting off, please take a photo. Tag me in on Instagram or LinkedIn or wherever you and I are connected on socials. I want to celebrate you. And please do me a favor, take a moment today to think. Who in your life appreciates leadership, appreciates human connection, appreciates growing? Share this podcast with them. Lead on purpose might be just the thing that somebody needs right now. Please be the person that puts it in front of them. I really appreciate it. Looking forward to connecting with you in our next episode.
