Curls Won't Stay

Jen Booth shows how to make curls last all day using Redken Hot Sets and a Bio Ionic curling iron. Start at the roots and leave the ends out, since ends drop first. Align front curls with your eye's outer corner for a subtle lift, then finish with texture spray for flexible hold.

Have you ever curled your hair only to have it fall flat before the night even starts? You know, the truth is, it's not just about curling. It's about the products you use, the way you position your iron, and the finishing touches that lock it all in. And today I'm going to give you the 3 unforgettable tips to make your curls stay all day. Plus a bonus hack most people skip, and truly it's the real difference. So tip number 1 is gonna be product and position of the curling iron. So first, let's set the foundation. Get this, curls won't last without the right product. That's why I always love to use Redken's Hot Sets. Has a hold of 22. It's a heat protectant and setting spray in one. It protects your hair and gives it memory so your curls hold. It works. Like, I've curled my hair without it, curled it with it. My curls with it stay a lot longer. Now, after you set the hair with the right product, it's also about the position of your curling iron. So this curling iron is on, so I'm not going to touch it. I have it warmed up for you guys. But this is what we call the lip, this part here. So we're going to call that the lip, the tongue. We'll call it the tongue. All right, um, if you point the tongue one way, you'll get Bounce and volume. If you point it the other way, you'll get sleek, uneven, or undone waves. So here's the easiest way to think about it. If the tongue of your curling iron is facing towards your face— so if you go like this and you go to pick up some hair and the tongue's towards your face, your curl will actually end up wrapping away from your face. So you have to think about the look that you're trying to achieve. If the tongue is facing like just away from your face, so the tongue's away from my face, see that your curls will wrap away, will wrap towards your face, so it would go towards my face. If it's here, away. If it's here, towards. Because guys, the little detail is everything because the direction changes the whole vibe. You know, curls away from your face give you that open, glamorous look. Curls towards your face feel softer, more romantic, and frame your features differently. So that's why you're definitely going to want to do a face shape analysis when you're here, so we can help you decide which way do you need to hold the tongue. And the fun part though is that you don't always have to pick just one direction. You can actually do a mix of both for a natural, like, beachy effect. This is why we also recommend using— this is the Bio Ionic long barrel curling iron. This is the inch and a half— inch and a quarter, sorry, inch 1.25. The longer barrel allows you to wrap more hair at once. The coating of it spreads heat more evenly, and it gets you through your head a whole lot faster without sacrificing. So what it looks like when you put it all together— I left a couple pieces out to show you guys. If I'm going to take this section here. My goal is going to be first to spray hot sets. Got that set. And then I want this to go away from my face, so I am going to put this in and wrap it around. And there she is. Perfect. All right, and you're thinking, well, what temperature are you— do you have that on, Jen? So for fine to fragile hair, 300°F to 325°F is perfect. You know, normal to medium hair, 325°F to degrees Fahrenheit, and then chemically treated or damaged hair is 275 to 300 degrees. So right now I have mine set on 320. My hair is a little bit more finer, and so you want to make sure that you get the right temperature, you have that heat protectant, and that's going to protect your hair. Now tip number 2, how to curl the front. So you can tell I left my front pieces out just for you guys. There's a really interesting tip though. We're going to curl based on your eye shape. So the game changer is right here in your front pieces. So instead of just curling randomly, what you want to do is line up with the outer corner of your eye. So if you take your finger and you lift it up, like what we're trying to do when we're creating curls is create lift. That's what a lot of times curls do, they create lift, especially when they go away from your face, right? And so like if we know like right here is my lifting part. Right, that's where we want our volume to stop— to start. And why is because it's going to lift our face almost like a mini eye lift, um, just for curling, and you'll instantly look more open, brighter, and youthful. So if I take my section here— now when I'm curling the front pieces, one thing I will do is kind of bring it forward. I'm going to spray my hot sets. This will kind of give it a nice little open look. Now Tongue is towards me. Now, right there, we said, is my definition point. So I'm going to pull the curling iron down to get about right there, and then I'm just going to wrap it around. Now, another hot tip you can do is once you get a curl is to actually let it cool in your hand like this. That's just going to really help the curl mold. So there is power in letting it cool in your hand. You can do that all over your head, especially if you have a special event and you really want those curls to hold. Take it out, and then we'll do the other section too. So same thing, I'm gonna actually divide that into 2 hot sets. Bring it around. Okay, now remember we talked about that eye lift right here. So when we put this in, you know, a lot of times this is the most fragile pieces for people too. So really make sure you coat them with hot sets, right? So bring it over, direct it over just a little bit, put the curling iron in where I need the most lift. And then we'll pull. And like, if I look at this spot here, I need a little bit more volume. I'll just curl that a little bit more, lift towards the scalp. Awesome. Now tip number 3 is curling from the top down, leaving your ends out just like I showed you. So just want to make sure that that's very clear too. So a lot of people will take— when they start curling, they'll just go from the bottom and curl it up. No, you actually, just like I did up You always want to start at the top, start near the root, you curl downward, and you see how I have my ends, you can tell, kind of out. Those ends are the first to drop when curled, so keeping that out means your style always stays fresh and you can pull it down, and also gives you that effortless, more modern vibe that everyone's after. Now you guys, here's the bonus tip. Brushing out and texture spray. Now here's the step most people skip, and it's why their curls look stiff or fall too soon. So once your curls cool, like give it a good 10 minutes. Like I can feel the heat still there just a little bit, so I'd let it cool just a little bit longer. You know, once they cool, don't leave them tight. We can gently brush them out to blend together. So my comb— I love to brush them out with a A comb like this that has short and long bristles kind of gives a little bit more texture. You know, when you brush them out, it's going to give it that more polished, professional salon look instead of like piecey little ringlets that are so out. And so when we go to brush it out, I'm just going to comb it out. Okay, now once we get that combed out, if we like, oh, you know what, I want a little bit more volume, that's where we can finish with the texture spray. So one thing you can do is— I am a big fan of the Kérastase VIP. One great way to kind of give your bangs that swooping is to take your hand, pull them together like this, and spray with a little texture spray. That's going to kind of give you that nice movement there. You can also go through and spray it like this. You can turn your head upside down and spray it. So texture spray, think of it like your hairspray's cooler, more flexible cousin. You know, it's going to add grip, volume, and that touchable hold so that your curls last all day without feeling country— crunchy. Another thing you can do if you want more volume is just to take your comb, and a lot of times I'll add some texture spray on the comb. And then if you just lightly lace your curls underneath, so like I'm just going to go in like this, that's a great way to— look at that, va-va-voom! Lace your curls underneath. That's a great way to give that volume as well. And so do these, uh, 4 things and you'll go from curls that drop in 2 hours to curls that look effortlessly and last all day. One other hot tip, if you want a little more volume, our texture duster is— you can take it and do like that. You can actually take your curls too and put a little bit of texture on them like that if you want a little movement there. You know, it's a really great place back here too. Awesome.
