What's Best For Your Faceshape?

Stylist Jen Booth teaches the 3-inch rule: measure from your chin to where a vertical line through your ear meets a horizontal line under your chin. If it's three inches or less, short hair flatters you; longer means long hair works better.

Have you ever stared at the mirror and asked yourself, would I look better with short hair or long hair? Or maybe you've been wondering, you know, is long hair or short hair really flattering for my face shape? Listen up, you're not alone. And believe it or not, There's a little trick from the '80s that might help you decide. It's called the 3-inch rule, and it stood the test of time. My grandmother used it, legends in the industry still teach it, and today I'm going to show it to you. You know, growing up, I remember sitting at my grandmother's vanity. She was the woman that always had her lipstick on, her hot rollers in, and advice ready. And one day I asked her, how do you know if someone should wear their hair short? She smiled and said, it's all in the 3-inch rule. You know, this rule came from Paris and it's the best in the business. Still, people swear by it. It turns out she was right. You know, years later I heard the exact same thing from one of the biggest names in our industry today, Sam Villa. Villa. Sam Villa, who is like the GOAT of our industry. He's like the Michael Jordan of our industry. Okay, so I'm gonna show you some ideas around should I wear my hair long or short, short, and I'm gonna show you how it works. So it's best if you can grab 2 markers. These are 2 Sharpie markers. Even a pencil or a comb will work. And so the first thing you're gonna want to do is you want to find— this is step 1— you want to find the center of your ear. So the center of your ear right here where it attaches to your head. So right there on me, it's there. So you're going to hold the marker there right in that area right there. So hold your marker straight out from that point, straight out from that point parallel to the floor. Step 2. Now take your second marker or pencil and place it under your chin. Take the lid off too. So just place it under your chin. Place it under your chin like you're drawing a straight line. Now, where those markers meet, you want to make a little dot if you can. Yep, so I'm making mine right there. Awesome. So again, where that vertical marker hits the horizontal one, make that little mark. So I got my little mark. You can see it. Now measure the distance between your chin and that mark. So I got my handy dandy tape right Tape, tape measure. So the chin and your mark. So if we come up— oops, 3 here. So mine is longer than 3 inches. It's just a little bit longer than 3 inches, actually 3 and a half. So if it's 3 inches or less, so this is gonna be 3 inches or less. So 3 inches or less, short hair usually flatters your best— your face shape best. If it's over 3 inches, so 3 inches plus, long hair tends to be more flattering. So if you saw mine was over 3 inches, um, I do prefer long hair on myself. You know, that's pretty wild right now. Let me be super clear. This isn't a rule to limit you. It's a guide.
