IWD 2023: Smash Biases, Empower Women! đ„

In this International Womenâs Day 2023 presentation, Jessica Hickman confronts entrenched gender bias and advocates for womenâs empowerment across multiple fronts. She rejects the stereotype that women are âticking timeâbombsâ after motherhood, emphasizing that women are business owners, leaders, and frontline workers in construction. Drawing on observations since moving to the Central West in 2020, she highlights four critical issues: (1) the alarming domesticâviolence crisis in Australia, where a woman is killed weekly by a current or former partner and women with disabilities, from culturally diverse backgrounds, or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women are 32 times more likely to be hospitalized; (2) the persistent gender pay gap, with women earning on average AU$12,000 less per year than men; (3) the âPink Taxâ and period poverty, noting that 1 in 5 Australian women still use unsuitable sanitary products such as socks or tissue, and recent policy steps in Wales allowing schoolgirls free access to sanitary items; and (4) the broader need to dismantle stigma around menstruation and workplace discrimination. Hickman calls for systemic change, reduced stigma, and concrete policy actions to smash biases and empower women.
