This has got nothing to do with saving enough for tuition, getting your financial aid package together, or going on your Target shopping blitz with your mom's credit card. Earning your college degree is no different than earning a black belt. Here's what you'll need: Discipline. And don't leave home without it. If you lack discipline, make that a priority before you waste a dime on tuition. Discipline is nothing more than the development of meaningful and purposeful habits. Develop positive disciplines and offload negative habits before you set foot on campus. Number 2: Focus. If you don't have it, you better get some. You can't force focus. Your mind actually works better in a state of relaxed engagement, a condition of clarity. Focus is about turning off the noise. It's about letting go of distractions that hold you back. Number 3: Perseverance. Knocked down 7 times, Get Up 8. One of the most difficult transitions for college freshmen is going from the top of the class to the middle of the pack. You're likely going to face challenges, adversities, and maybe even failure that you've never experienced before. Adversity, challenges, even failures are opportunities— if you make them so. Number 4: Confidence. Now, confidence is not defined by the surety of an outcome. Confidence is knowing that you've prepared for what you're about to face. #5: Learn how to think like a black belt. You knew I was gonna say that. If you paid attention to the first 4 steps, you're well on your way. Perfection is not a destination. It's a never-ending process. College is not the end of your life's learning. It's a new beginning. It's your chance to develop authentic mastery. Learning how to learn. Master that process. You're gonna use it the rest of your life. If you need some help developing the mindset you'll need to succeed in college, If you want to learn how to think like a black belt, give me a shout. That's what I do.
