Independence means caring for yourself. Healthy interdependence happens when both people work on self-improvement and become more valuable to each other. Codependency is vampiric: one person drains the other while offering nothing back.

We all want to be independent people. We want to take care of ourselves. We want to take care of the folks around us. At the same time, we have a great need as human beings to be interdependent, right, to have relationships with one another. In psychology, there's another term called codependency, and that's when I can't live without you or you can't live without me. That's unhealthy. That's not right. Interdependence depends on each of us trying to be the best that we can be. When I perfect myself, when I become a better person, I become more valuable to you. I become a better resource to you. Likewise, you become a better resource to me when you're perfecting yourself. So interdependency on that level is very healthy. When we can ask for help or extend a hand And it's positive. It's moving us forward. It's moving us toward our idea of perfection or success. Codependency is always a vampiristic type of thing. You know, I'm sucking your lifeblood out of you. I'm taking from you. And on the other side of a codependent relationship, it's very, very difficult because I may be trying to give what I don't have. You see, if I'm not healthy, if I'm not strong, if I don't have the resources, then I really don't have anything of value to offer you. So concentrate really on being independent. Make yourself the best possible person you can be. Embrace that continual process of self-perfection, and then you can create healthy interdependent relationships. And really, that's what the Human Web is all about.
