A boxer gets knocked down and his friends yell "Get up!" He later realizes they should have told him to stay down. The people who protect you from reckless risks, not the ones cheering you on, are who you actually want around when you're scared and taking big swings.
There I was, knocked out in the first round, laying there. I'm looking up counting the lights. I can hear my buddies at ringside. What do you suppose they're yelling?
Get up!
Yeah, nice guys, huh?
Get up, take some more!
Right, so when we were drinking afterwards, I said, I heard you guys, I heard you guys. Get up, get up, get up, get up! I said, look, if I ever hear that again, your ass is coming up in the ring and I'm going to sit there ringside. You should, you love me? They said, yeah, I love you. Then you should be yelling, Stay down. Don't move. Stay down. I was wrong. I was wrong. And I realized that later on. Those are exactly the kind of people you want on your side, aren't they? Right? When you're taking a knocks, when you're doing something ridiculous, when you're making all the worst decisions, when your greatest fears are facing you, those are the people you want on your side, at ringside, in your corner. Right? You don't want the rational people. Screw the rational people. What have they ever done? Right? Rationality will talk you out of every good idea you'll ever have in your life. So those are the folks we want to surround ourselves with.
