We all love lists, right? Well, some of us. How about this one? Learn how to think like a black belt in 5 steps. Number 1: Choose discipline and choose your disciplines. Discipline is the development of meaningful and purposeful habits. The thing about habits is we've all got them. Take a few minutes and think about what you do every single day. Which habits are moving you forward and which are holding you back? #2: Focus. Start with the disciplines you identified in step 1. Concentrate your energy and your efforts on the thoughts and actions that are going to move you closer to your goals. Focus can't be forced. It's a process of turning off the noise and allowing yourself to operate with clarity. #3: Strap on your belt. Before a workout, a black belt enters the dojo, kneels, and ties on the belt. Strapping on the belt is a ritual that places us squarely in the present moment. This short ritual shifts our mindset. We forget about the trials and tribulations of the day and we focus on what we have to do here and now. Find or develop a ritual that helps you focus on the present moment. After all, that's where everything gets done. Number 4: Embrace this one idea: Perfection is not a destination. It's a never-ending process. That one little piece of philosophy is the most precious gift I've ever received in my life as a black belt. I learned that the greatest rewards come from continual commitment to personal development, growth, learning, and mastery. I learned that the true master is never finished. I learned to approach each new day with a sense of wonder and curiosity, to never be satisfied with the status quo, and to always commit myself to continual self-improvement at any level. If you understand this one idea, you'll know how to think like a black belt. But sometimes stuff happens. We face challenges. We face failures. We face defeat. Sometimes we're facing conditions and circumstances that are way outside our own control. So, number 5: Knock down 7 times, get up 8. This old bit of black belt philosophy says no matter how many times you get knocked down, you're going to get right back up and get into the fight. Commit yourself to the mindset of perseverance. Vince Lombardi once said, "It's not whether you get knocked down, it's whether you get back up. The people who come out on top are usually the people who get up one more time while the other guy takes the count." Simple. Not easy. If it was easy, we'd give it to the white belts.
