It's so good to be here, Jim. You know, before we get started, I want to say, you know, there's not many that have been in this industry as long as myself. Tony's in longer than both of us, but it's, it's fun. We had the chance to spend some time together in Florida and, you know, we've known each other through the years and have had great conversations, but it was really great to spend extra time with you and see your dedication to serving, your depth of knowledge. And, you know, you look like you're in your 20s still, so which is amazing. So you blow people away that you're heading toward— I think you're gonna have your 50th. Is that, is that true?
Yeah, 5-0.
Big 5-0. And but I just want to share before we get started, I know why so many people follow you and listen to you. It's not only your depth of caring, but all of those years of learning have definitely turned into a deep wisdom. And I feel that with you and I see it. And it's just beautiful to watch. And I just want to say kudos to you for staying committed and serving because it definitely shows and it shines.
Yeah. I appreciate you and Tony, your insights over the decades. You've been personal mentors for me. Love your books, love your work and our conversations. The conversation we're going to have today with everybody is about owning your future. So nobody else has to do it for you. You take personal responsibility. So why is it a time to stop sitting on our hands and really shift our thinking to unlock a new level of purpose, a new level of passion, a new level of success?
I guess we could argue throughout time that it's always a good time to do the thing that you're in control of. I think if we boil down to the the deepest human condition, the biggest fear. I mean, heck, I was playing with AI just 2 days ago, really digging in. What is the biggest fear of life? The top biggest fears, not, you know, there are fears right now. There's inflation. There is the dollar on its way out, the US dollar on the way out. And we have, we have media that pushes apart. We have politicians that push us apart. We just got out of COVID then inflation. So we have things in the moment that we can be afraid of. And then there's those lifelong internal fears that we've had since the beginning of the human race, right? Since people have been on this earth. And one of them is just feeling like you don't matter, that you didn't live into who you were supposed to be. And if you're listening right now and you're in a career, a job that fills your heart, that allows you to prosper, but also gives you passion and purpose, congratulations. I mean that with all of me. Maybe you're not the one meant to be an entrepreneur. Maybe you're an intrapreneur, maybe you're someone in a company, you're growing, you love it. I hope on our team we have some people that do that. But if you read the statistics, it's less than 10% of the world are in a job that gives them that purpose, that passion, and allows them the income to have the freedom or the control that they want. So I think any time in history is a good time to consider doing your own thing. I think why now— what COVID— we all know the negatives, but what COVID did 3 years ago is gave us the gift of a lot of people sat home and got the self-actualization, the realization like, I'm living someone else's life. Like, I'm in a routine. I'm in a— as Napoleon Hill used to say, I'm in a hypnotic rhythm. I get up, I drink the coffee, I drive the same way, I do the same thing. And then I'm wondering why I don't reach another level of happiness or have joy, why I feel like I'm having a midlife crisis or whatever you want to call it. I think COVID made people snap out of it and go, Okay. I thought I took a job to be safe. I don't know if jobs are even safe. I thought I took a job because it'd be easier, but I'm not— I don't feel alive. I can't— I dread getting out of bed. And no matter how hard I work, I can't reach that level of income and impact that I really want. And I think COVID really pulled back the curtain on that, Jim, at least in my opinion. And simultaneously, the barrier to entry to do your own thing. Of course, Tony Robbins and I— Tony's been in the self-education industry for 45 years. I've been in for 27 years. When you pull back the curtain and you decide it's time to do your own thing, of course we're leaning into showing people that if you're gonna start your own thing, if you want to create impact, if you want to have purpose and be a part of a growing industry, someplace to really look is the valuable asset of your life experience to be that vehicle to look into. So I know I'm jumping into that really quick, but I think anytime That you're not happy, you're not fulfilled, you're not creating the success you want, it's time to look to doing your own thing. I think COVID pulled back the curtain, and I think simultaneously technology has allowed easier access. But if you take the information industry, the knowledge industry, the self-education industry, the one you're in, Jim, the one I'm in, if you look just 27 years ago when I started, I had to produce an infomercial.
Right.
There was no other way to do it. People are like, why'd you do an infomercial? Because I'm old and the AOL dial-up didn't play videos back then, right? So we did direct mail. And we did an infomercial. The infomercial cost me $150,000. I had to pay $50,000 in media. I had to create manuals and booklets and put them in a warehouse, hire a warehouse, hire a call center. I was $250,000 in just to see if I could sell one course. But my heart was filled. I bought Tony Robbins' course at the time. He gave me information he got paid for and it shifted my life. Probably the same way you felt, Jim. I want to be in that business. I get to help. You get to help. You had a brain issue as a kid. You fix that for yourself. Now you get paid to help other people go faster and quicker. Could there be anything better in the history of the world, right? So I saw what Tony did to me. I got the bug. I spent every dime I had plus credit card money to see if I could make one sale. Fast forward to today. If you're feeling that it's time to scale or start your own thing, I challenge you to pull back, like investigate this industry that Jim and I are in. Why? It's at about a billion dollars a day. Growing exponentially, headed towards a trillion-dollar-a-year industry by 2028, they predict. Access is different. You don't have to create an infomercial and spend lots of money. You can realize that this asset that you have, that you don't have to put in inventory, you don't have to pay for the booklets, you don't have to warehouse it or store it or freeze it or air condition or heat it, you get to sell it, impact others, and create a real business. So, I think if you look at the perfect storm, fast-growing industry, COVID made us realize we want to do something more. I need to look for something. Where to start? How? Why not consider selling what you know, selling your life experience? Now, you just need to know where to start, a framework, and how to put it together. But, that's kind of— I know I went a long way down that road, Jim, but just I'm so passionate about it because we're doing this big challenge. And, I just see, I get to witness people who go, I don't have anything to sell. I don't have any followers. Who would buy from me? No one knows my name. And I watched 6 months later, they're in this, they're impacting lives, and you just see that glow. So long answer, but that's, that's where I started.
You know, and you give people the detailed blueprint of what to do, you know, in this, in this 5-day challenge, which is extraordinary. And, and it's never been easier, right? You mentioned to get in the game, it was a huge investment at a Back when you and I started, there was no internet, there was no social media, there was no YouTube, there were no iPhones to be able to record content. So, you and Tony talk about it's not always just about external resources, it's about our internal resourcefulness.
Yeah.
So, why do people— why do they wait? Why do they wait for the outside world to give them maybe even permission? Maybe somebody's tuning in right now and they joined the challenge, but then their family and friends are They are sincerely concerned because like, why are you always watching these challenges and these podcasts, reading those books all the time? And they can be sincere, but they could also be sincerely wrong. Why do we put the onus on somebody else, the ownership outside of ourselves to get permission or other people's expectations or their opinions, and we sedate our own ambitions, our own passion, if you will?
Jim, you've been doing this so long that you just know how people think and feel, and you go right to the heart of it. And I love that because it's always about going upstream. I got to tell you, right now I'm in upstate New York with the little town I grew up in that I moved away from 22 years ago. And I ran away from this little town. It's a town of 5,000 people. It's a farm town now. My wife loves it here, so we bought a farm. I'm looking at garden out this way, apple trees out here. We got a chicken coop over here. It's crazy. And I'm in the guest house right now. And I share that because I'm sitting at a table. We built a big table to have family here. And we've been here for over a week and we had some friends and I had my high school friends over. Now, these are guys, wonderful human beings.
Hmm.
And I remember these guys, we all had dreams of getting out of this town. We all wanted to do something different. We wanted to have a better life than our parents. But I sat here, I'm 54 now, and I sat here with my buddies who are wonderful men. And my one guy, my one buddy said, God, Dean, I'm so happy for you. You know, you know, for me, I figured I would just do that construction thing for 10 years, but then I got the mortgage and then the kids, and I get that. And then he said, then I started getting older, like, man, it's too late for me. He said, I felt like it was too late in my 30s, and then I really felt like it was too late in my 40s. He said, I took a job that got me up at 5 in the morning and I got home at 7. I missed my kids in the morning and I barely saw them at night. And now they're 22 and 18 and I missed it. And my other buddy's like, yeah, I'm retiring in 18 months. I guess I'll putz around. And I'm like, what the hell does putz around mean? And I'm just listening to my friends and it hit me. These guys are as smart as me, Jim. They're wonderful dudes. They have good morals and good values, but they didn't get disturbed enough. With where they were to take the uncomfortable action to gain a new skill, to step off the path, to go against their family, to go against their intuition, their self-doubt, to have a family member go, come on, you an educator? You barely got out of high school. Jim, you're going to teach about brain? Aren't you the kid with the brain problem? Right? So what drives us? I guess the question is what drives us? And that's what I wanted to lean into because it's so fresh because I literally— they left here. I almost had tears in my eyes for these guys. Like they're fun and one of One of them brought a 6-pack of beer. I don't drink beer, but he had a beer and the other— they were just cool to see. And simultaneously, it was sad. And they were only a millimeter away from having the same experience of life I had. And what is the difference? And here's what I want to say, and this might not be the traditional answer. And Jim, I would love your take on this, is I found a way. Of course, you want to craft a compelling future. Of course, you want a deep reason why you want to go after it. But if I really think back why I made the move, I went to the dark side. I got the dark side from Tom Bilyeu. The naming of it, not that was after the fact. And what do I mean by that? My dad's here. My dad was married multiple times, didn't make more than $30,000 a year, struggled, couldn't go to my games, fought with a lot of people in this family. What motivated me and what my answer is probably different today is I don't care what it takes. Positive reinforcement or the freaking dark side. You know what I thought every day? If I stay in this town, I am going to end up like my father. 4 marriages, alone, broke, fights with everybody in his family. I'm just being honest. I love him. My dad's here with me, right? So I love him. We're in a great space. He's 87 years old. But I envisioned staying of— I envisioned getting to the end of my life and meeting the man I could have been. I probably tortured myself in a small way To say, if you don't get bold, if you're not courageous, if you don't move forward, if you don't try something new, you're gonna die now. You might live till you're 90, but you'll be dead at 27 years old. You'll be numb, and and we just don't get a second chance. So lots of answers I could give Jim, but just because it's so fresh in my mind while I was sitting here, I'm like, what makes me different? I'm not smarter than these guys. I found a way to be disturbed within action because if I didn't act, I could predict my future. I could see it in my dad. I could see it in my friends. So I, I found a way to be curious enough to know that I'd rather go out there like the man in the arena, Theodore Roosevelt speech. I'd rather get in the arena, get bloodied, get marred, fail miserably, get stepped on, than to be in the stands being an observer with someone else's name on my jersey. And I did it by Probably going to the dark side and saying, if I don't, I'm going to end up like these people and I can't handle that.
I just got goosebumps. I call them truth bumps. Our team in our Slack communications, they were excited about this interview and watching this interview and they had all these key questions because we follow your work and you are a real master of mindset. I believe that creating the life you want can be scary. But you know what's scarier is regret.
Yeah.
You know, there's nothing worse than being stuck somewhere where we just feel deep down that we don't, we don't belong. So how would you unpack, you know, and transfer that, that mindset? What are the key characteristics or traits that an individual who's listening to right now, they might be a different age or stage of life, how can they cultivate or embrace this, this entrepreneurial spirit? Um, this is something that somebody's born with. To be able to excel today in a world that's constantly changing, in a world that people might feel a little confused and threatened about automation or AI, what are some of the key characteristics that you think will give people the wherewithal? Because I believe all behavior is belief-driven. If you believe you can or believe you can't, as the saying goes, either way you're right. Are there certain characteristics? You mentioned curiosity. Do you have too much to read but too little time? Are you Shelves full of books that you haven't read yet and become shelf help, not self-help. And that's why I created the Kwik Reading Course. 15 minutes a day, 21 days will absolutely transform your life. Just go to kwikbrain.com/reading, use the code PODCAST15, and you'll get instant access.
There's a million things I could say. Like, you know, you, you could talk about the lane of self-education and why we could talk about how Marketing through love and service is the breakthrough that everybody needs because then you fall in love with selling. So I think of my tactical ways, like my brain immediately goes down all these channels that I want to share with you. But the way I've trained myself over the years is to go upstream. Like you've had opportunity before, you've been presented with something that could have given you a different angle. You started things in the past and dabbled and then gave up. Guilty, me too. So I'm— this is not pointing fingers, me too. So I like to go upstream. It's like we could keep putting a Band-Aid on the cut, or can we change our diet so the cut never comes? So when I, when I think about, uh, the entrepreneurial mindset, that what do we need? We need the thing— this is a Tony Robbins 101, right? He said when a rocket takes off, right, it uses what, 90% of the rocket fuel to get like 15 feet off the ground to get that big rocket started. Then when it's out in space, you just hit the button and you're going 1,000 miles an hour. We all need the thing that gets the rocket off the ground. And whether you failed before or, or tried something and it didn't work in the past, that's okay. Maybe, maybe all of that was designed so you'd be here today. So what I'm going to share is what do you need to leverage to actually move forward? Like, I'll make this answer as quick as I possibly can because I love this topic and I could go on for hours. And I would just say is I touched on it before. One that I've used, I'm not kidding you, for probably 35 years is getting to the end of my life and realizing I missed it. I share that and I say that aloud and it hurts my stomach because I've trained my brain when I go to make a decision, I literally say at the end of my life, was it more scary to move forward or was it more scary not to? You know, I had the honor and the pleasure of working with Matthew McConaughey. And he said the thing that— I love this. He said the thing that kept him up for life more than anything else is the not knowing.
Hmm.
Like, what if I don't try? I'll never know. Like, and he said literally he would lose sleep on the not knowing and he goes, I'm going to do it anyway. I know I'm going to school to be a lawyer. I'm going to try to be an actor. I can't sleep over it, so I'm going to do it anyway. He was at a— if you read his book Greenlights, he was in a tribe in Africa and the biggest guy in the tribe came out to fistfight him to be honored to enter this tribe. And he was like, he went to bed that night. He's like, I'm gonna get my butt kicked, but not knowing what it's like to fight a guy like that. I gotta fight him, right? And he just adapted this. So I don't know what it takes for you listening today. Yes, you want to learn from people who've already been there. You want to find something that fills your heart and your soul. You want to be in an industry that's exponentially growing, not going down, right? You want all those things. You want to fall in love with marketing and sales because you know you're serving people. You want to realize that you're Life experience might be the most valuable asset you own, but if you don't get the rocket off the ground, if you don't take that bold action, all of it will be a dream, like a train going down the tracks. And every six months you see a cool train with great opportunity. You see it, you're joyful, and then if you don't do anything, the train just keeps going. And then you wait and go, "Ah, no, I'm okay. I should just be happy with where I'm at. I'm blessed. Let me learn meditation. Let me pop a Xanax one day a week. I should just drink a glass of wine every day to numb it so I don't feel bad." Or today you could just get disturbed. And say, "Screw that! Enough! I'm gonna try something." Listen, Tony and I do this five-day challenge. We hope you come. We hope you fall in love with it. But I promise it'll spark something in you. If it's not this, it'll spark something. And then you have to find a way to be disturbed with not taking action. That's the best answer I have. At least where the space I'm in today, Jim.
And that really, without a reason, people won't get the the results. You know that I believe people their lives are difficult because either We're leaving our comfort zone and we do feel uncomfortable, or life is hard because you're staying in your comfort zone. And, the comfort zone might be a nice place to visit, but not much grows there. Right. You mentioned everybody's listening, they have their own set of unique life experiences, they have their unique set of knowledge, skills, abilities, passions, which are incredibly valuable assets for anybody to be able to have. And, if they could share it in a way where they could go not only make a dollar but also make a difference. I mean, that's a game changer because at the end of our lives when we're taking our final breaths, none of other people's opinions are going to matter. None of their expectations are going to matter.
Absolutely not.
What's going to matter is how we laughed and we love, we lived, and certainly how we learned. And so, why did the two of you create this 5-day challenge for everybody? What was the impetus?
Tony and I have been friends for over a decade. He changed my life 27 years ago when I bought his course. And 10 years ago, we met and built a bond and a friendship. And I golf twice a year with Tony. I'm not a golfer, but we golf because it's a great place with no phones, get to talk. We're on the golf course about 6 years ago. We said, if we're going to do a business together, what should we do? And he talked about how Jim Rohn changed his life. If he didn't pay to go to a live event, it's only $47 at the time, But, it was a whole week's pay for him. If he didn't pay to go to that event and watch Jim Rohn share his life and experiences and allow this fire to be put in Tony Robbins, he said, I wouldn't be Tony Robbins. And, if Tony didn't get my money 27 years ago when I bought his course, I wouldn't be the man I am today. And, the people we've got to impact and the people that have come in our lives and Jim and thousands of others have come into our lives to help support us, like the thing that changed our life was self-education.
Yeah.
It was really hard. to get in when Tony and I did, when you did, Jim. Barrier to entry was huge. Barrier to entry is gone. Plus, and you know this, Jim, 25 years ago, it wasn't cool to have a coach. It wasn't cool to buy a course. It wasn't cool to have a mentor. It wasn't cool to, to have a consultant. Like you said, I have a coach. Like, why are you on a baseball team? Like, what do you mean you have a coach? Right now, during COVID one of the top searches in the world was how to be a coach or how to, how to get a coach. It has become So think it's become cool. It's become easier to access. So we're on the golf course talking about it, and Tony, you're like, how do we leave our legacy in a massive way? Is help people, more people do what we do because you don't have to be Tony Robbins anymore to be able to make an impact, make a dollar, and make a difference. And we just decided that day, let's change. And then we said, how do we get new people to see it? We said, let's pull back the curtain and do a one-day event and then a three-day.
And they were like.
If you know anything about Tony, he's like, not enough, not enough. They need more. They need more. So that's— it's a 5-day event and we call it a challenge because we challenge you every day to take an uncomfortable action after we teach you. That's how it came about. I'd love to say it was more methodical. 5 days are better than 3. It's like 5 days we can share why you, why now. Day 1, Jim, you're on day 1. Can't wait to watch you. Then Tony comes on day 1 and like busts beliefs better than any human I've ever seen. It's like day 1, you know why now, why you, why this, bust old beliefs. Day 2, you'll learn how to identify what to sell, who to sell it to. Day 3, you'll fall in love with sales through service and love. Day 4, you'll realize how to put it together and teach it with confidence. Day 5, it all comes together. So, 5 days was magical to really give people a path at the end to go, well, hell yes, I'm doing this. So, that's where it all came about.
This comes at the perfect time because I think there's another level for all of us. And, even some of us have been in this for a little bit. The week that you're going live is my first week in my 50s and I'm excited to actually go through it. And, I encourage everybody in our community, all of you who are listening to this right now to join us and we could do it together because while I get to share on day 1, I'll be going through it with everybody as well. So, people could get there and secure their spot really easy. Just go to Future Secure your spot. I encourage everybody to share that URL with your family, your friends, your team, because sometimes it's hard to explain this—
True story.
—to people who aren't participating in it, right? And this is not like a— this is not a small event. I mean, your event, I mean, this is a global event. This is something where people tune in and they see countless people online with them going through it. Everybody's coming around and the different stories, they have different scripts that they've lived and different message to be able to share. And yet, it's so valuable right now and there's no excuse. People don't have to pay anything other than paying attention.
Yeah. And, the last thing I'll say, Jim, just there'll be over 100 people from 120 countries. There'll be hundreds and hundreds of thousands of people on and you'll realize you're not alone in this journey who are realizing you're meant for more and you're just trying to investigate and gain the skills. And what you're going to realize is you are enough, you know enough, and you could truly do this if you just know where to start and you have a proven framework. And the last thing I'll say is pretend you paid $1,000 for this. I know that sounds weird, but sometimes when things are free, you go, oh yeah, Tony and Dean are doing that free thing. Do you know what it would cost me to pay If you had to get Jim and Jay Shetty and Trent Shelton and Chalene Johnson and Cody Sanchez and Tony Robbins, do you know how you have to? That's I just said about a million bucks just to get them on a stage, just with those few people. And each of us, we were on the phone with Jim multiple times talking about the through line and how to how we're going to impact and how each day is going to go. This thing is it should be a thousand or a five thousand dollar event. But we've made the choice to make it free. So pretend you paid $1,000, put it in your phone, go to— it's future450.com. And I love that what you said, Jim, hard to explain to people. So send the link to someone you know, someone else that needs it, and, uh, starts August 1st.
Yeah, I encourage everybody to— I think one of the best things people do after learning, and I got this from Tony, is just to take a small simple step. You know, never, never leave, uh, that place where you just learned something. And just leave it as potential power. And I think one thing that people could do besides signing up is maybe even take a screenshot of wherever you're consuming this conversation right now, whether it happens to be on YouTube or Spotify or iTunes, and tag Dean, tag myself, and put the link, Future 450, and share it with your fans, your followers, your friends, your family. Because the reason to learn anything obviously is 2 reasons. You learn it for yourself so you could benefit. But you also learn it so the people in your life could benefit from that knowledge. I think that while there's a gap between those who have and those who have not, there's also a gap between those people who know something and those who don't.
Yes.
And everybody who's listening right now, they know something others don't. We sometimes mitigate that and say, oh, we tell ourselves these stories like, oh, that's not that important. Why would people care to hear that? But I believe we can learn something from everybody and everybody could be our teacher. And when you could take your mess and turn it into your message, I mean, what a wonderful gift that you give to humanity.
Beyond true. And that's what— I know you feel the passion and the drive that we have to do this and we are fired up for this one. There's a lot of new stuff that has changed just in the last 6 months in the world and we're right there in forefront of it too. I love that the term simplicity on the other side of complexity. There's no such thing as a magical money machine that brings you money, joy, happiness, and abundance for doing nothing.
