You know, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. 5 apples a day and the doctor you will pay. What makes a good brain go bad? You know, the major neurodegenerative conditions that we so fear— Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, etc.— are at their root inflammatory disorders. So we've really got to do everything we can to rein in inflammation. Now we have a new tool for that, and that is controlling our uric acid. The biggest player of all today is the unique sugar called fructose. So fructose is metabolized directly into uric acid. Higher dietary fructose, higher uric acid, higher inflammation, bad for the brain.
What does that leave in terms of people's stance on, on fruit?
Actual consumption of fruit is associated with a slightly lower uric acid. So what I'm saying today is don't cut out the fruit. Have some fruit. That's totally fine.
