Jim Kwik argues you can remember names and faces if you actually want to. He uses a thought experiment: if someone offered you a million dollars to remember the next person's name, you'd do it. The barrier isn't ability. It's motivation.

Let's say you want to remember names and faces and you're normally not very good at it, but there was a suitcase, a fictional suitcase of $1 million cash for you or your favorite charity. If you just remember the name of the next person you meet, how many people listening are going to remember that person's name? Yeah, a whole lot. So it had nothing to do with your capabilities. So as a memory coach, I'm going to call people on their BS, their belief systems. It has everything to do with your motivation.
