Most of your brain evolved to process nonverbal signals from your body, emotions, and posture, not words. Learning to read these somatic signals lets you understand what your brain is actually telling you and act on it.
Chapters
Most of the gray matter in your brain developed over hundreds of millions of years in a nonverbal capacity. And so in somatics, we hold that the sensations, emotions, behaviors, postures, basically all of the feeling information in the body is equal, if not more important information that your brain is processing, responding to, navigating, making decisions by as the verbal language that you're aware of. And largely throughout kind of psychological history, they referred to this area as the unconscious. And Jen and I, and a lot of us somatic therapists, we don't really use that word as much because we just say it's just a place where you've never been trained to direct your attention to and to be able to listen to that secret language of the body, to interpret what feelings, sensations, emotions, actions, behaviors, all of that means to your brain so that you can respond to it meaningfully and take meaningful action.
