Jim Kwik explains how unconscious rereading wastes 20-30% of reading time and breaks your flow. Most readers constantly rewind on words or lines without realizing it, which disrupts comprehension instead of helping it. Recognizing this habit is the first step to reading faster while actually understanding more.

You know, have you ever had the experience of going back and just rereading words? You know, and maybe you didn't even plan to do it, but unconsciously you're going back and you reread like a whole line, and you say to yourself, didn't that already happen before? And so they say upwards of 20 to 30% of your time is spent just rereading words. And that's insane. That's such a waste of time because imagine if there's— and it doesn't even help with your comprehension. You know, if you're watching a movie, let's say you're watching a movie at home, and someone in the corner has a remote control, and every 30 seconds they just kind of rewind the movie, and it's a movie you really, really want to see, how are you going to feel about that person? You're going to be pretty annoyed. Yeah, you're definitely going to be really annoyed. And does it help you understand the movie any better? No. No, because it interrupts the rhythm and the flow. And that's what happens with reading. If you go back and reread words, it actually interrupts the process.
