How to properly set goals for 2018

In this solo YouTube presentation, Joe Apfelbaum outlines a three‑step system for setting and achieving goals in 2018. He begins by stressing the need for a personal vision—identifying values, passions, past accomplishments, and a clear vision statement—so goals are not borrowed from others. Next, he introduces a “map” that breaks life into distinct roles (e.g., career, health, relationships) and projects desired outcomes over 40‑year, 10‑year, 3‑year, and 1‑year horizons, creating a big‑hairy‑audacious goal. He emphasizes that a map must include prioritized actions, because lack of priorities, not lack of time, blocks progress. The third step is taking action: establishing a weekly plan, a morning routine, a brain‑dump, and a “most important thing” focus each day. He discusses practical focus‑busting tactics such as a strict phone and social‑media policy, attention‑destroying distractions (his dog Basil), and the importance of accountability partners, mentors, and measurable reporting. Apfelbaum then promotes a six‑class masterclass (starting Jan 1 2018) that provides dashboards, spreadsheets, and templates covering vision statements, role‑based roadmaps, action plans, habit trackers, financial and health goals, celebration rituals, issue‑resolution lists, bucket‑lists, and daily schedules. He invites viewers to sign up, promising personalized attention and a community of learners.

I did it. I properly set goals for 2018. So what's the method? How do you set goals properly? How do you set goals? Maybe Basil can tell you all. How do you set goals? Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Come here. Tell everyone. Tell everyone how to set goals. Tell everyone. So how do you set goals? How do you set goals for 2018? What do you need to do? Let me tell you, I'm going to give it to you right now. You ready? Step number 1 is you need to have a vision. Because if you set goals and you don't have a vision, you're setting your goals based on someone else's vision. So what does it mean to have a vision? To really get to know who you are. What are your values? What are your passions? What are your accomplishments? And break it down. That's step number 1, have a vision statement. Step number 2, you need to have a map. You need to be able to know where you're going. Now, a lot of people, they have no idea where they're going. They're just traveling on a road. Now, if you're just traveling on a road, who knows where you're going? And you say, how long is it going to take to get to California? I don't even know if I'm going to California. I don't even know where I'm going. I'm just driving. Now, you don't have to know— if you know how to get to Cali, that you want to go to California, you don't need to know how to get to California. Even if it's pitch dark and all you can see is 20 feet in front of you, you can have unwavering faith. that the universe, that the road will take you there, but you need to have a map so you know where your destination is. So I'd like you to think about the different roles in your life. Everyone has different roles that they play in their life. And in each role, where do you want to be in 40 years from now, in 10 years from now, in 3 years from now, in a year from now? And I'd like you to break that down and create this big hairy audacious goal and dare to dream again, because now you have your vision. You know what your ideal life looks like. So step number 1 is having a vision, which means your passions, your strengths, understanding what your message is, breaking it all down. What are your failures? Really examining, really examining the past year. You know, you take a moment to think about what you've accomplished in the past year and you literally, literally sit down and you look at your photos. Have you ever sat down month by month and reviewed your photos from the past year and reviewed your calendar from the past year? I've created a beautiful step-by-step system that allows you to do this. Have a vision, understand your MAP, and the most important thing within MAP is understanding your priorities so you know what to focus on each day, each week, each month so that you actually accomplish your goals. The problem is not that you don't have enough time. The problem, my friends, is that you don't have priorities, and that's why you're not getting it done. You need to know what the most important thing to do is at any given time, and to do that, you need to have a roadmap in advance with clear priorities and outcomes that are actionable. And then brings us to the 3rd tip. Which is taking action. And I'm not just saying take action. I'm saying have a weekly plan, have a morning routine, understand the power of a brain dump. People take fiber, but that doesn't help you with a brain dump. There you go. Go fetch, go fetch. She wants to play. What's the one most important thing that you need to do at any given day? How do you deal with focus busters? This is here, right here. You see this? This is an attention destroying machine. She's an attention destroying machine. How do you deal with that? What's your social media policy for 2018? What's your policy about your phone? Do you leave your phone on vibrate? Are you going to allow other people to rule your day? At what time do you turn your phone on in the morning? What's your policy regarding that? My phone stays off until I do my entire morning routine, until I meditate, until I journal, until I think about what I need to do that day. And I'm super creative. I don't look at my notifications because for me, I need to fill up my own cup before I can fill up your cup. And that's why I can show up with this cup, with this state of mind. And then without this, nothing works. Without this, nothing works. They say without integrity, nothing works. But integrity, my friends, is about accountability. Accountability, the ability to count, understanding who the mentors are in your life that you need, who they are, the people that already did it within the different roles that you have. How do you measure? How do you measure? How do you report? Who's going to actually hold you accountable? And then how do you celebrate to reward yourself? You see, when I train this dog here, Basil, when I train her to sit and she sits, I reward her. We celebrate together. I give her a little snack. You got to learn from how you train animals to train yourself to build the right habits. So that's why I prepared this beautiful masterclass. That's available for you to take starting January 1st, starting January 1st, 2018. And I'm going to do 6 classes. And if you want to join the masterclass, if you want to join the masterclass, I will send you an email or I will send you some information about how you can join that masterclass. And it's going to cost a couple dollars, but not a lot. It's not going to break the bank. And let me tell you, if you get together with me and you take this masterclass, I'm going to send you my dashboard and you're going to be able to see exactly, number one, what your values are, your passions, your accomplishments, your why, your gifts, your commitments. You're going to have a personal vision statement. You're going to have a roadmap and the different roles in your life 40 years from now, 10 years from now, 3 years from now, 1 year from now. You're going to understand what you did in the past year. That was really great. You're going to have an action plan, a morning routine, a brain dump, understand how to pick your most important thing, your wildly important goal. You're going to have a plan for social media, how not to let it affect you and take over your life. You're going to have an email checking strategy, a phone policy. You're going to have accountability buddies. You're going to have mentors for each area in your life that's important. You're going to have clear goals about your income, about your weight, about your finances, about your relationship. How many times you want to go on vacation, your spirituality, your passions. You're going to understand how to celebrate when you hit each individual goal. You're going to have an issues list with why each thing's an issue, what it's worth to you, who can help you with it, by when you want to get it resolved, and what the most ideal resolution is. You're going to have a bucket list of things that you want to do and things that you don't want to do, and by when, with who, why. In the different ways and how much it's going to cost you. And then, my friends, you're going to have a daily schedule along with your morning routine for each day of the week that you can look back at and say, what do I need to do now? What do I need to do now to be successful? And I'm going to break it down for you in a spreadsheet so that you have it all and to make it really, really easy. And people already signed up to it. Oops. Yeah, and you didn't even whine. That must have hurt. And people already signed up to it. And you know what? I'm going to close it off. I'm going to sell it out. A couple more people and I'm sold out because I want to give the people who sign up major attention. I want to give them the love that they deserve. And I have the dates. The dates are January 1st, 2018, January 5th, 2018, January 12th, 2018, January 17th, 2018. I'm going to knock it out. I'm going to knock it out of the park. And I'm going to give you the love that you need, the love that you deserve so that you can grow your life, grow your business.
