Are Affirmations a Waste of Time?

John Assaraf explains how affirmations rewire your brain through repetition and emotion, moving beliefs from conscious effort to automatic identity. He cured severe ulcerative colitis in his early 20s using daily health affirmations, and recommends present-tense, emotionally charged statements like actors adopting a role.

They know the role now they can just be the role. Reading it, feeling it, visualizing it. Not only can you. I know it works. All right, so are affirmations a total waste of time? What about declarations, you know, declaring that something is real? That is, what about I promise? And you don't really believe the promise. So let's understand something first and foremost. And you know who this is? It's John. Think about affirmations like my good friend Dr. John Demartini does. And in my discussions with him, he's got one of the best ideas around that. I like it. An affirmation is really all about affirming something in one's mind. So an affirmation isn't about stating something that you don't believe as truth. No. It's taking something that you may not believe and affirming it in your mind so that you start to believe it and you start to behave in ways in alignment with what it is that you believe. So think about this. Were you born with any beliefs? No. So other people's beliefs, in most cases were given to you? Right? Me too. Through parents, teachers, siblings, TV, things we read, things we watched, etc. And so when I started using affirmations back when I was 19, it started off with things like, I'm so happy and grateful for the fact that I am now achieving all my goals and dreams. Now, at the time, I wasn't. When I would say that, I would hear this little voice in my head going, bullshit, that's not true. But I was also taught to understand that that voice was that critical voice that we all have, almost like a little, you know, critical person, you know, sitting on your shoulder, you know, trying to remind you that you're not good enough, not worthy enough, not smart enough, etc. I was taught to say, next. Just take that idea and go, next. And then go. I'm so happy and grateful for the fact that I am achieving all my goals and dreams. The repetition side of affirmations with emotion activates, okay, electrical signals in your brain, right? When the electrical signals in your brains are firing, they call them neurons that fire together. The affirmation wired together. Now, why is that important? Well, if I don't believe something like, I'm so happy and grateful for the fact that I'm achieving every one of my goals and dreams, and yet I repeat it, I emotionalize it, I feel it, and I say, yes, this is what I want to believe. This is what I'm choosing to believe. I'm deliberately and consciously creating My belief system, well, why not do that deliberately instead of believing all the shit that's out there, right, that people believe because of their experiences? So what happens is if we fire these neurons enough in our brain and we wire them enough in our brain, they go from conscious effort, I don't believe it to, well, maybe I do believe it to. I believe it to, how do I behave in ways that I believe. That's how we develop our beliefs, that's how we develop our identity. That's how we develop our character. So if you have an expectation of this belief being true, and then you ask yourself, well, how can I act in alignment in accordance with these beliefs? And then you go and behave that way, don't you then build self confidence and self trust and more certainty around this belief? Well, isn't that what a Hollywood actor or actress does when they learn a new role that they don't believe or even know of when they first start, but through repetition, through practice, they reinforce the patterns. And then when they reinforce the patterns through work, through effort, then it's effortless because they've memorized it. They know the role now they could just be the role like that. So whether it's my affirmation or some of the affirmations that you can find online, why not start a daily affirmation practice, a daily declaration, practice a daily promise to yourself. Practice so that you fire or refire the neurons, so that you rewire your brain with positive, empowering, constructive beliefs that will then act as the lens by which you see the world, but also will guide your behaviors and your expectations. Because as you see it and believe it in your mind, you will then see it and believe it in the real world. And so affirmations have played a huge part of my life. And many of you know, when I was in my early 20s, you may know, you may not know, I had severe ulcerative colitis. And this is going back, you know, literally 42 years ago. And I was taking a lot of pills and going to the doctors and going to the hospital for checkups. And I tried to figure out, like, why was I sick? And it was stress, stress related. But it was showing up as swollen colon. That's not a funny joke. That's swollen colon. And I had ulcers in my colon, which means I was, you know, bleeding there. And I started off. I found this on the Internet. I modified it, not the Internet. I found this, I think, in the library. It was a daily affirmation for health. And I'll read it to You. And this is how I actually cured myself. Between reading it, feeling it, visualizing it, and then behaving in ways that made this real. I got rid of my disease that I had for a year and a half where they thought they were going to take out my colon, part of my colon at 22. And the affirmations, my daily health affirmation, feel free to use it. Right? It's my body and all its organs were created by the infinite intelligence in my subconscious mind. It knows how to heal me. Its wisdom created all my organs, tissues, bones and muscles. This infinite healing presence within me is now transforming every atom of my being, making me whole and perfect. Now, you always want to say affirmations in the present tense, just so you know, not in the future. Now. Why? Because your subconscious doesn't know the difference between something in the past or present or future. So when you say it now, you're giving it the super power of your brain, the instruction. So I give thanks for the healing that is taking place now. Wonderful are the creative works of the creative intelligence within me. I am now perfectly healthy. I am now perfectly healthy. So as I would read it, and obviously I have remembered this because I've done it for 42 years, as I would read it, I would feel it. As I would feel it, I would visualize, I would actually see myself healing. Instead of seeing myself in a state of disposition ease, I would get myself into a state of at ease. I would see my colon healing. I would see myself doing everything that I couldn't do when I had the disease. And over the next one week, three weeks, five weeks, it went away. On the fifth week, all the symptoms went away. So my question for you, can you affirm in your mind, declare in your mind, promise in your mind long enough to make the affirmation declaration, the promise, real? Not only can you, I know it works. So now I want to show you some great affirmations from other awesome creators. Some of them are friends of mine, some influencers, so that you can get a really good grasp of awesome affirmations.
I am enough. I am enough. I've always been enough. And now I know that I'm enough. Everyone else knows it too. And I will always be enough.

I bless and embrace all of my gifts, even the gifts that came wrapped in sandpaper. The gift of a job. Ending the gift of a relationship. Ending the gift of a hard moment, the gift of challenge. For they make me who I am today, and I love who I am today. When I'm under pressure, I am like coal. I turn to diamond. I bless and embrace all of my gifts, even the ones that came wrapped in sandpaper.
