Coming Together in a Time of Fear & Change

John Assaraf (YouTube) addresses widespread fear and uncertainty (COVID, monkeypox, shootings, economic volatility, war) and recommends deliberate internal practices to respond rather than react. He frames adaptation as a core human skill across five domains (spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, financial) and teaches concrete methods: daily meditation, hourly "Take Six" breathing to "calm the circuits," and the AYA routine (Awareness → Intention → Action) to interrupt negative thought patterns and shape behavior. He cites two specific numeric claims to motivate urgency (approx. 6,200 thoughts/day; ~90% of thoughts are negative) and emphasizes community, prayer-plus-action, and practicing awareness to make better decisions.

So if you want to evolve yourself, if you want to manage your mindset, which you have to do before you master your mindset, then you have to master the art of awareness first. You have to master your intentions. You have to mass or manage your behavior. All right, hey, everyone. Hope you're doing great. Coming together in time of change and uncertainty again, a time of fear. Tell me if I'm on the right path here, but there's so much going on in the world right now, right? We've got Covid cases up around the world. We've got monkeypox now entering, you know, the spotlights in part of the world with nine confirmed cases in the United States. We got the Texas shooting. 19 kids, two teachers, another killing another one. Can you freaking believe it? In 2022, mortgage rates in the United States are up to 5.7%. Temperature in January was the sixth highest in January in the year. We've got a war going on in Europe. We've got a stock market crashing. Mutual funds, you know, have taken a beating again. People have been, you know, doing well in the stock market, in real estate for the last, you know, what, 12, 13 years, all of a sudden, you know, we're getting hit again. Is anybody else feeling too much change at the same time? Too many uncertainties? Is anybody feeling that? But you can't put your head in the sand either when all of this stuff is happening. So it's great to focus on the positive. However, a lot of people don't know how to pay attention to what they want. So anybody, you know, paying attention to all of the changes and uncertainty now? Yes, I'm seeing people. A lot of people are suffering right now. A lot of people in a state of uncertainty right now. A lot of people are afraid, right? Can you imagine not having a home if you're living in Ukraine and you've been asked to walk 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 miles? My whole family, seven of my family members just went through Covid after two and a half years of being know, totally off of COVID So there's a lot going on, right? So first and foremost, you know, I like to deal with reality of what is going on and what is the truth, first and foremost. Now, let me ask you a question. Would you agree that times of uncertainty, times maybe a fear for some people, times of stress for some people, is also a time for us to learn how to adapt. Isn't adaptation one of the greatest skills, okay, that we as humans can learn? And many years ago, when I was in the Galapagos Islands. I bought a hat. And if you have ever been to the Galapagos, you'll know that it's like going back 5 million years. And there's a saying, there's. And I got this hat says, adapt or die. Why? Because the survival of the fittest, okay, the whole idea of survival of the fittest is based on Darwin's work. And we actually retraced his trail with the beagle when he was writing about the survival of the fittest and learning about adaptation is the animals that learn to adapt were the ones that survived. The ones that got to survive obviously multiplied. So here is my question for you, okay? We are sometimes the most advanced species on Earth, most intelligent, and I'm going to say sometimes, right? What are you doing to adapt right now? What are you doing to adapt right now? What are you doing to adapt mentally? What are you doing to adapt emotionally? What are you doing to adapt physically? What are you doing to adapt spiritually? What are you doing to adapt financially? Right? Those are the five places of adaptation, right? So spiritually, emotionally, mentally, physically, financially. So what are you doing? Okay, to adapt, right? What are you doing to adapt? When there are things happening in our environment, whose responsibility is it to adapt? Right? So let me share something with you. If it's true that adaptation is a skill, right? If it's true that, you know, as a human species, we have the ability to adapt, let me give you a couple of things that may help, okay? And I like that. Praying. Yeah. Share with me. You know what you're doing. Divergent. I guess you didn't like my comments because you're still here, right? So share with me. How do you manage. Let's start with number one. How do you manage your mindset to go from being reactive to being responsive? Is that something that every one of us can do? When we're reacting, it's usually without any thought, right? It's usually without any thought. When we're responding, it's usually because of thought, right? And I don't mean just thoughts. I mean thinking. So the way I like to do it is say, here's what's happening. Whether it's, you know, interest rates, the market crashing, COVID Monkeypox, the Texas shooting, which, please, you know, let's say some prayers to all of the families, all of the families, you know, that are going through this nightmare right now. But what can we do? What you and I can do to respond instead of react, right? So naturally, depending on the situation, we may react in anger, and that's That's a part of our fight flight response, right? We're going to act out of anger and blame and shame and guilt. That's right. But we may act in a state of fear, right? Fear is a protective state, since the number one priority of our brain is to avoid any pain or discomfort, but also to make sure that anything that is happening around us, right. Is managed for survival and safety. Survival and safety. So let's ask a question of what is it that you and I can do to respond versus react, right? So, Maggie, you're saying no fear. Fear is a subconscious reaction. Whenever we feel threat, whenever we feel uncertain, whenever we feel right, we may lose or be in pain or discomfort. So there's no such thing as no fear. That's like saying, you know, no air. No such thing. No air, you die. No fear, you die. Right? So the question now becomes, how do I turn my fear into fuel? Right? How do I turn my awareness into a positive response? How do I turn, okay, uncertainty into certainty? How many of you meditate every morning? The first thing I do every single day, right, Is meditate. So wake up and I meditate. Now. Why meditate? Well, number one, it calibrates my brain. Left hemisphere, right hemisphere. Number two, it shuts off all of the noise, right? All of the noise. All my thoughts go on. Good thoughts, bad thoughts, positive, negative, constructive, destructive, empowering, disembodied. It shuts them down. So I could just be in a state of calmness. And in the state of calmness without activating the sympathetic nervous system, which is what usually happens when we're looking at the news, when. When we're reading all the stuff that is happening in the world that may not be to our taste or may be at bay to harm us. So meditation gives us a chance to calibrate our intentions. Meditation gives us the ability to calibrate our intentions. And if we layer on top of that mindfulness, being aware of thoughts, emotions, feelings, sensations and behaviors, Thoughts, emotions, feelings, sensations and behaviors. Is it possible that in a higher state of awareness without, and this is critical, without judgment, blame, shame, guilt or justification, without judgment, blame, shame, guilt or justification, just awareness, then that's where our power lays, where we can then make deliberate conscious choices. So instead of being a victim of circumstances, what's happening out there in the world, what if we sat back for just a moment, meditate, be mindful, and then make deliberate choices? Right. Could we then master more of our mindset? Could we then master more of our emotion? Right. So is it possible for us, regardless of what's happening out there to manage our mindset on our emotions, which usually dictates our behavior. Right? So here's a couple things I'd like you to do. Many of you have read my Amazon number one best selling book, inner size. I'm going to give you two inner sizes to practice. Okay? All right. Inner size number one. It's called take six, comma, the circuits. Take six. Calm the circuits. How many of you are aware that our brain, your brain, my brain functionally works the same? Every brain works the same functionally, right? Like a car. Functionally works the same. So if every brain functionally works the same, are you aware that you have your nervous system that divided into two key parts? One is the sympathetic nervous system. The fight, flight, freeze and faint part of your nervous system. When you are in a stressful modality, that means that your sympathetic nervous system has been activated. But we also have another part of our nervous system called the parasympathetic nervous system, which is our calm to respond or digest, where things are taking a lot more time. Slowly. So there's a slow system and a fast system. Sometimes we need that sympathetic nervous system, you know, when we need a little kick of adrenaline or cortisol, right? Norepinephrine, et cetera. Those are the like get going high stress, okay. You know, like caffeinated feeling that we have. Now the good news is, is that's when we're reacting very, very, very quickly. The challenging news is, is it shuts off that thinking Einstein part of the brain. It activates the, what I call the Frankenstein's monster part of the brain, which is the reactive what if negative part of the brain. But let me share something with you. What if every hour, every hour for five minutes, you took a little bit of time and you just did some breathing? Inner sizes. Let me show you. Take six. Calm the circuit. Intersize. Number one. Since when we are in a stressed state? Fearful, worried, anxiety. Doubtful. We're usually breathing shallowly. We're usually myopically focused and micro focused versus macro focused. What if every hour you took five minutes and you just did some breathing exercises, right? And if you started to breathe slowly in through your nose, you did a deep, deep, deep breath in. Hold it at the top for two seconds. 1001, 1002. Then when you breathe out, what if you breathe out as if you're blowing out through a straw. This is a pen, but imagine you pucker your lips and you blow out slowly, slowly, slowly, slowly. Are you aware that in less than 90 seconds, less than 90 seconds. You deactivate, okay, the stress response part of the brain and you reactivate the thinking, imagination, what I call as the Einstein part of the brain, the left prefrontal cortex. Are you aware that you and I will make much better decisions in a calm, responsive state than we will in a stressed out state most of the time? Now listen, is it okay to be in a stretched state if somebody's pulled a gun to your head? Yeah. But the more you're able to stay calm, the better decisions you're going to make, Right? So here's the question for you. Do you have a daily and hourly practice to get calm so you can respond and make better decisions? Right. So here's recommendation. Take five minutes at the top of every hour, get your mobile phone, get your mobile phone set, your timer to go off five minutes before the top of every hour. Take five minutes to do inner size number one, so you can be calm, so you can respond. And then number two, if you want to add what I mentioned earlier, the AYA inner size, the aia, awareness, intention, action, then what you do is you ask yourself this question. The awareness is, what have my thoughts, emotions, feelings, sensations and behaviors been the last 55 minutes? Have they been positive, Are they negative? Am I reacting? Am I happy, am I sad, am I worried, am I stressed? And if you do that just in the state of awareness, mindfulness, without judging yourself or blaming yourself, just be aware of it. And then you say, well, what's my intention for the next hour? Awareness gives you choice. Choice is what can give you freedom. So the question is, what's your intention for the next 55 minutes to an hour? My intention is to be positive. My intention is to be productive. My intention is to take these action steps. My intention is. And now you direct yourself on what you want to do. And then the AYA awareness I, intention A is action. What action step can you take right now? Now, why would you want to do inner size number one, take six, calm the circuits. And why would you want to do AYA on a regular basis? And here is the million dollar answer. Would you agree that yours in my brain just repeats patterns over and over and over and over again? Would you agree? My brain, your brain, every brain repeats patterns that have, that we've been conditioned to repeat. Yes, we are creatures of habitual patterns, thought patterns, emotional patterns, behavioral patterns. So what happens when you interrupt your normal pattern just by five minutes a day? What happens when you become more aware of your thoughts? What happens when you set intentions and you Take one action step. Like what happens? Well, what happens is who's controlling the pattern now? Who's operating out of a state of awareness versus a state of reactive habitual patterns, and that is you. So if you want to evolve yourself, if you want to manage your mindset, which you have to do before you master your mindset, then you have to master the art of awareness first. You have to master your intentions. You have to mass or manage your behavior. Well, if you did this five to eight or ten times a day now, is the outside world controlling you or are you responding to the outside world? Right, which one? I think you all know the answer to that. So when we are faced with a lot of negative stuff in the world, a lot of uncertainty, a lot of change, a lot of stuff that can negatively affect us, then what we want to do is not react to all of it because there's so much. It's overwhelming. And an overwhelmed brain is a stressed brain. A stress brain is in a reactive modality. And here's something to remember. You and I will always react based on our highest level of training. You and I will always react automatically based on our highest level of training. Most human beings have not been taught to be aware. Most human beings have not been taught to set intentions every hour. Most human beings are not good at giving themselves an instruction and following through to completion. So how do you start? Well, you start with some daily inner sizes, right? Some daily inner sizes. You start to practice every single day. And so what I'm not saying is that there isn't stuff happening out there. There isn't stuff happening in your life. But what I am saying is, are you reacting or are you responding? Are you thoughtfully, intentionally, deliberately responding? Or do you catch yourself in that doom loop of negativity? Are you catching yourself in that doom loop of automatic negative emotions? Are you catching yourself in that loop of doing the same shit over and over and over again, wondering why your results aren't changing? All right, so listen, people invest time with me, money with me, for me to give them help and guidance so that they can master their mindset, master their emotions, master their behaviors, which then takes care of their results. And in a time of uncertainty, right, in a time of a lot of fear for some people, A lot of people, when they're in a state of fear and uncertainty and doubt and stress and anxiety, they stick their head in the sand and as if nothing's happening or it's just going to go away. Well, listen, some things will go away, other things get worse. But What I want to make sure, right, is that you learn how to manage your own mindsets. If it's coming from your own head, 10 times more, you've got to do this right. So if you think about. It's coming from my own head, right? If you have, you know, let's say automatic negative thoughts. So how many thoughts do we have a day on average? Anybody? Tell me? Yeah, about 6,200 thoughts a day is the latest research. So not 50,000. About 6,200 thoughts a day. Can anybody tell me what the, how many, what percentage of the average person's thoughts are negative or disempowering or self deprecating? Negative, disempowering, self deprecating. Anybody know? For the average person, it's over 90%. 90% of 6,000 thoughts are negative or disempowering or self deprecating. 90%. So let me ask you a question. Where are those thoughts coming from? Are you deliberately choosing these negative, disempowering, destructive to thoughts? Are you, are you deliberately choosing them? The average person's not deliberately choosing. Why? Because thoughts come from the subconscious mind like effervescent bubbles that come up from a soft drink. Imagine if you know, if you're on, if you've been alive for 30, 40, 50, 60 years, times 325 or 365 days, times 6200. Okay, thoughts a day, that's a lot of thoughts and memories, right? So thoughts are percolated from our subconscious brain based on triggers from our outside world, based on patterns that are used to running without thought, based on smells, based on what we see, based on what we hear. And thoughts automatically percolate up. 90% negative, 10% positive. Fear is one of the reasons. Self image is another one. Limiting beliefs is another one. Ego is another. Of course. So what if you and I just thought of thoughts, okay, as they're not good or bad, they just are thoughts just is. What if through mindfulness, which we've been talking about for the last 24 minutes, what if your automatic negative thoughts were nothing more than just little effervescent bubbles? And what if we said that the negative thoughts let's color them red and the positive thoughts, let's color them blue? Can you get that visual? I'm going to give you a visual for thoughts. What if your job is to be aware of the red and the blue bubbles and your job is to let the negative ones go and to focus and reinforce the positive ones? What if that was an inner size, okay, that you did and you didn't believe your thoughts, you just were aware of them. But you chose the positive ones and reinforced them with more positive ones, right? So if our job is to be aware of patterns, thought patterns, bubbles, red ones and blue ones, the blue ones we keep and we reinforce. The red ones, we just let them float by like we put them in a hotter balloon and float them back up into the sky. What if awareness is what gives you choice and choice is what gives you freedom, as I mentioned before. Now, is that a skill now is that me being adaptive? You're never ever, ever going to get rid of all of your negative or disempowering or destructive or fearful thoughts, ever. It's just part of how portion of your brain works. There's a portion of your brain, okay, that's part of your default mode network, just the default way that it works. That's always saying this. What if negative, what if you fail? What if you get hurt? What if you lose money? What if she leaves you? What if he leaves you? What if she says no? What if she says yes? What if he does this? There's a part of your brain that's constantly doing that. And so here's what happens to a lot of people without practicing awareness. They have a thought, right? Then they think about the thought which has already released a neurochemical into their bloodstream, and they think about what they're feeling, and they feel what they think about and they reactivate the circuit over and over and over again, re releasing the cortisol, epinephrine or norepinephrine and reinforcing the fear pattern, let's say. So in a heightened state of adrenaline release, okay, epinephrine, your brain wires the thought 10,000 times faster as a protective mechanism. Did you hear what I just said? In an adrenaline state, an epinephrine induced state, which is nothing more than a neurochemical in your bloodstream. If you think about what you're feeling, and it's negative, disempowering, destructive, you reinforce that even though you don't want it. Why? Because you're paying attention to it instead of releasing it. Responding versus reacting, right? So there's nothing wrong with your thoughts, there's nothing wrong with your emotions. That's what drives your behaviors. But if you don't know how to first be aware of and manage your thoughts, if you don't know how to be aware of and manage your emotions, the energy in motion, then you're a victim of your thoughts, the negative ones. Destructive was disempowering ones, your fears, and you can't turn them into your fuel for success. So if we have a hundred billion dollar brain that we own, you own yours, I own mine, and we don't know how to manage it better, then you're a victim of your old conditioning. Your parents, your teachers, the meanings you give things, the negative patterns, associations that reside within your brain. So this is why you want to start with inner size number one. Take six common circuits every hour. This is why you want to follow it up with the inner size number two. Ayah. Why? Because now you're in the heart of managing thoughts and emotions first, and that will help you manage behaviors second. And when you manage behaviors, don't results take care of themselves, right? So we don't want to focus right on the negative. We want to be aware of it. We don't want to focus on the disempowering emotions. We want to be aware of them. We don't want to focus on the behaviors that we're taking or not taking. We want to be aware of them and then be deliberate. This is deliberate conscious evolution of yourself. All right? Deliberate conscious evolution of yourself. Is this helpful? Is this. This is why affirmations, declarations, promises, prayers work, right? But when you pray, I also want you to make sure that you follow up with the action. Don't pray saying, hey, save me and help me. Okay? Pray and say, show me and guide me, and then take action. Listen, if you like this, please share this. There's nothing, nothing to buy here. Just. Just share this. Let's. Let's help people. You know, this is a time for us to come together. As I mentioned, there's a lot of stuff happening in the world. There's probably a lot of stuff happening in your life, and I appreciate that. I respect that. And when you manage and master your mindset and emotions and behaviors, you are able to become victorious instead of being a victim. Okay? So stand guard. Okay? Stand guard at the forefront of your mind. This is the. This is your. This is what creates an empowered life or a disempowered life. Okay. You know, listen, I don't know whether you believe that we are all connected. I do. Which means we want to lift each other up, you know, as we climb. We want to help each other through the challenging times. We want to love each other more. We want to care for each other more. We want to be respectful of each other more. We want to stop shaming and blaming and start lifting each other up. Okay? We. I need it. You need it. We all need it. And when we're in this together and we lift ourselves up, then everybody does better. And if you want to be happier, make somebody else happy. You want more love? Give some more love.
