Finding Your Life's Purpose

John Assaraf walks through how to write a personal life-purpose statement by journaling the prompt "The purpose of my life is..." and refining it over time. Your purpose doesn't need to be grand, just meaningful to you. He shares his own statement and a simple written exercise called an "inner size."

Hey there. Let's have a little dialogue on life's purpose. It is such a deep, profound topic, and it takes a little bit of time to sit with yourself quietly to discover what your life purpose is really all about. And there are some people who have got a grand, visionary, amazing purpose for their life, and that's great for them. There are others whose life purpose is a lot simpler, and that's great for them, too. It's not easy for most of us to know what is our life's purpose, mostly because we've not taken the time to think about it, to sit in reflection, be pensive, write down thoughts, ideas, see what resonates and feels good. A lot of times we get caught up in seeing what other people's life purpose is, and we put ourselves down thinking, well, shouldn't my life purpose be that big or that grand? No, your life's purpose should be whatever feels really good for you. And sometimes or many times, it's okay to be in the mystery, to be in a state, you know, just sitting there. And maybe women won't do this, but men do have to have a beard and to think and to feel and to ask questions. It's taken me years to hone in my life's purpose. And I'll read it to you, I've got it here on my computer, and I'll share with you the steps that I took to get it okay. Really succinct and precise. For me, my life's purpose. The purpose of my life is to live and authentically experience it as fully as possible. It is to be more aware and present, to love deeply, to give immensely, and to serve and love others to the best of my abilities. It is to use all the gifts God has bestowed upon me and make the biggest, most positive impact on our beautiful planet, people worldwide. It is to consistently grow, learn, evolve, and become all that I can become. So I have tweaked that version for 10 years, maybe even longer. But the process started by me asking myself a question, what is my life's purpose? And I would sit with a piece of paper. Since I don't type really fast, I'd sit with a piece of paper and I would just start off like this. The purpose of my life is to. And then I'd start writing, have fun, make a difference in the lives of others, to grow, to love, to care, to evolve, to. To understand whatever it is. Start off by just writing down the things that come up, that are easy, that percolate up to your consciousness as you write out the purpose of my life is to and think about what makes you feel good, what makes you feel that doing that will make you happy, doing that will challenge you, doing that will make you more aware. Doing that will make you feel good doing that. And what I mean by that is whatever you write down is the purpose of your life. And it's okay if your purpose evolves as you're younger. You may have a certain purpose as you get a little bit older, a certain purpose as, as you're in your wisdom, maybe retirement years. Your life may be filled with different sense of purpose, but the key is this. It doesn't have to be altruistic, it doesn't have to be big and grandiose. It just has to be right for you. There is no right or wrong purpose. There's just the right one for you. So I want you to do a little inner size. And inner size is remember any mental or emotional technique or process that's going to cause you to grow and strengthen your mindset and your emotional resolve and even your knowledge and skills. So your little inner size is take a sheet of paper and write out the purpose of my life is and just write out whatever is there and then see if you can take whatever you write out and put it into one or two paragraphs. And then over the next, however long it takes you tweak it and see if you could just resonate with it. And if you do that and practice and tweak, you'll come up with your life's purpose. Have an awesome, awesome, awesome day.
