Get Unstuck! The Method To Maintain Motivation

John Assaraf explains how to stay motivated using fear of your past as a deterrent and future goals as a pull forward. He stresses that fear is a normal brain response and recommends aligning your vision across different time horizons, from weekly to yearly.

I'm going to focus and be in congruence, in alignment, in synchronicity with the vision, the goals and dreams I have for this week, this month, this quarter, this year, next year. And focus on using both. Never again. And focus on your goal and dream. Hey there. Great day to you. I hope you are feeling just absolutely amazing. And if you're not, how about looking up, smiling and coming up with a couple things that you're grateful for today. All right, so I was watching some of the dialogue that was happening in our community and the topic of what motivates you came up. And I shared that in many cases, I use two types of motivation to keep me focused on my goals. In many circles, it's known as the carrot and the stick type of motivation. And so let me explain. When I think of where I've come from and I think of my insecurities, my fears, my lack of confidence, my lack of knowledge or skills, those things in my past and even today motivate me to never, ever, ever allow them to pull me back to a life where I just didn't feel that I was capable or worthy of achieving my goals. And so when I think about those days and feeling totally incapable of fitting in, and I know it may be hard for you to see me today and realize that that was me one day, but I can. I can feel it as if it was yesterday where I was frozen with fear of not being good enough and not being smart enough. And a lot of times, even today, when I think about the grand goals and dreams that I want to achieve and I don't have the knowledge or the skills yet, that uncertainty, that self doubt kicks in, that fear response. And first and foremost, it's through education, through awareness that I know that that's a normal reaction within my brain and through my body. But I am not the fear. I'm not my past. I am a result of the past. But I focus on the future. What do I want to achieve? So I have the carrot behind me saying I never want to go back there again. And I have the, oh, I'm sorry, that's the stick part. And then I have the carrot saying, what am I going to focus on that is going to be, you know, happy and positive and release that dopamine and serotonin and oxytocin when I share my big goals and dreams with others, and so you can use the carrot and say, never again do I want to achieve those results that I wasn't proud of. Never again do I want to feel and stay in the feeling of insecurity or self doubt or fear, et cetera. And now I'm going to focus, I'm going to flip the switch and I'm going to focus on the goal, the dream, what I want. Now, it's a delicate balance, right between you know what you want and your current state of affairs, your circumstances, your conditions, your past, the insecurities, the limiting beliefs, the fears, the self image, the lack of knowledge and skills. It's a gentle balance. Being aware of that is a true part of who I am and who you are. But you can use that to your advantage and as leverage to say, I'm not going to focus on that. I'm not going to be that. I'm going to focus and be in congruence, in alignment, in synchronicity with the vision, the goals and dreams I have for this week, this month, this quarter, this year, next year. And focus on using both never again. And focus on your goal and dream. Hey, this is John.
