How to Set Attainable Business Goals

John Assaraf walks through setting business goals by starting with revenue targets, then reverse-engineering the leads and sales needed to hit them. He warns that vague plans trigger fear in the brain and block action, and says you need to learn the how-to when a goal is beyond what you can already do.

If the how to exists and you don't know it, in the absence of how to, your brain is going to go into default mode of fear, uncertainty and doubt. And when fear, uncertainty and doubt are activated in the brain, you actually deactivate the motivational and behavioral circuit in the brain. You deactivate the very part of your brain that you need in order to take action. What's the difference in a vision and goals? Like what's the difference in a vision and goals? If you think about this, a vision is the end state, the end destination of how you see your business and yourself achieving the vision, right? So it's the end state. So if you were an architect, it would be like seeing the building finished or if you're designing a home, see seeing the home finished, with each room finished. Now, when we talk about business success and business growth, so when we're talking about setting some goals, there's really two ways to set goals. And I like to set goals for my businesses based on what I call our financial and non financial goals. Right? So I want to know what are my financial goals. For example, for 2022, how much is the top line revenue that I want to have? All of the revenue, how much profit do I want to earn? So I start off with goals around revenue first. Why? Why do you think it's important to start off with revenue targets first? Well, because once you have a revenue target, let's say it's $100,000 for the year, alright? And let's say you have a product that's $1,000. Now you just need to figure out how do I sell 100 of those products over the course of a year. So now when you have a financial goal of $100,000 a year, and let's say your product's 100 or $1,000, now you just have to come up with the strategies for how am I going to sell 1,000 of those or how am I going to add a variety of different products. So I always start off with financial goals and then I add what are my non financial goals? So I start off with goals for the business in its entirety and then I reverse engineer the plans to achieve each one of those goals. Does that make sense? Does that make sense? We start with the financial goals for the year, then we work on the non financial goal. So if you want to achieve entrepreneurial success, one of the challenges most business owners have is they invest very little time in thinking and planning. And you've heard me say this before, if you've been watching my Work for a while is PPP equals ppp. Does anybody know what PPP equals EPPP mean? Not pp, but PPP equals ppp. It means piss poor planning equals piss poor performance. Piss poor planning equals piss poor performance. And harshal, I don't have time to answer every question. I'm sorry. So when we focus on the goals first, right? It's vision first, then the goals, then we focus on how we're going to achieve the goals. Now what happens in the brain is we have that vision that we're using that left prefrontal cortex or the Einstein part of our brain. All right, we're managing the Frankenstein's monster. We'll talk about that another day. But we're activating the occipital lobe. Our brain requires the smart specificity of the goal, but it also needs in order to create a smoother path for your brain, it also needs what? How are you going to achieve the goal? So where most entrepreneurs fail themselves is not in having a vision and some goals, but they fail in saying, now how am I going to do that? How am I going to generate enough leads to make enough sales to make the goals a reality? Does that make sense? Our brain operates like an orchestra in some cases. And the orchestra, okay, has a variety of different members of the orchestra that need to work together to create harmony. A goal without a plan of how to achieve it, just hope and prayer. And what you don't want to do is use hope and prayer as your core strategy. So when we set goals, there are two types of goals that you can set. One goal is setting a goal that you know how to achieve and you develop the plan to achieve it. And the other goal that you can set, which I prefer, is set goals you have no idea how to achieve. Then use your genius brain to upgrade your knowledge and your skills in order to be able to achieve that goal. And so when we are setting financial goals, all financial goals in business need to be broken out into how many leads and how many sales we need in order to achieve those financial goals. Without doing this second part of how many leads do I need? Then how do you know what your marketing should be? Should you be advertising on TV, on radio, on Facebook, on Instagram, on YouTube? Do you need to buy leads? Do you need to do joint venture for leads? Do you need, okay, to do blogs? Do you need to do video? Like, what do you need to do in order to get the number of leads so that you can make the number of sales that you need? Most people are using hope and Prayer as their core strategy. And I call the drug of choice for most entrepreneurs is hopium. I hope that what I do works. Business is math. Business is math, meaning if you want to make $100,000 or 500,000 or a million, that means that you have to make X number of sales, right? Well, X number of sales means that you have to have X number of people to talk to or X number of people to see your offer, your product or your service, right? Well, how many people do you need to get into your funnel, into your orbit to see your product, your service, your offering? If you don't know that number, how will you ever be methodical and how will you ever create predictability when there is a lot of possibility? Does that make sense? So if you have goals, are you going to set goals that you know how to achieve or are you going to set goals you don't know how to achieve? And then you're going to upgrade your knowledge and your skills and your strength strategies in order to achieve them. What type of business owner are you? Is business a skill that you have to upgrade? Because in business you have a lot of different hats, right? You've got the visionary hat, you've got the sales hat, you've got the marketing hat, you've got the product development hat, you got the technology hat, you got the client care hat that has to be worn. Reshu, what kind of doctor are you? Right? So when we're dealing with setting goals, we have to then go to that next level of how is that goal going to be achieved? And most business owners have a product or a service that they love, but they lack the sales and marketing skills to be able to generate enough qualified leads that will then buy their program, product or service. On a scale of 1 to 10, how good are you at selling and marketing your program, product or service? How good are you on a scale of 1 to 10? Right, let me know in the chat. Cannabis prototype on hold waiting for partners. Igor are there. Raymond. All right, so 0a7. Thanks for being honest. Yeah. So if you're not really good at marketing, right, helping people understand your brand, your program, product or service, and you don't know how to develop a sales process that's emotional and logical, right? Then chances are you're not going to be able to go into the marketplace and compete at a high level and you may not be able to convert as many prospects as possible. So let's go back to setting goals. There are two parts to the goal achieving process, right? Part one is the setting of the goals, As I mentioned earlier, if you've just joined us, you want to set up your financial and non financial goals for your company, but then you want to go into your sales department and set up your goals for your sales department. Your goals, your marketing department, your product development plan. What are the goals for January, for the first quarter, for the second quarter, the third quarter, and the fourth quarter of the year? When we start our year with our goals intact, our vision is where we're going to start. And that's where we want to end up at the end of the year. But then we want to move towards what are the goals for the fourth quarter, third quarter, second quarter, first quarter? Now what happens is we start to give our brain a path to be able to see how we're going to achieve the goal. What happens in our brain when we set a goal that we don't either have the knowledge, the skills, or the path to achieve the goals, then what happens is the Frankenstein part of the brain, which I have. Hold on right up there. The Frankenstein part of the brain gets activated and the Frankenstein part of the brain starts to do what? It starts to release stress hormones, whether it's cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine. If we don't have the knowledge or the skills or the strategies to achieve the goal, then our brain goes into this default mode of, what if I don't achieve it? What if I do my best and I fail? So what I want you to take away from today's session, especially. All right. Is when we have goals. Even the simplest of plans of how we are going to achieve the goal allows us, okay, to reduce the stress and the tension in our brain and allows us to see, okay, how we're going to achieve it, okay? And so when we're doing this, it allows us to move faster towards achieving our goal. So when we set goals and we start to create some simple plans of how we are going to achieve the goal, now what we're doing is we're deactivating, okay, that fear, stress, uncertainty circuit part of our brain and we're reactivating that Einstein part of the brain that can help us figure out how we can achieve the goal. Does that make sense? When we're dealing with our own brain, there's a part of our brain that in the absence of a vision, we just do busy work versus concrete, productive work. In the absence of goals, we do what's easy and convenient versus what needs to be done. We are busy doing things, but we're not really busy Doing productive things. So one of the things I teach every student, right, is. Yes, create the vision. Yes. Create the goals. And let's come up with simple, easy to follow, simple, easy to follow plans that at least get the momentum going of achievement. Why? Because when we create plans that we take action on, we actually release, okay, we release the dopamine, the reward neurochemical, which our brain then wants more of that reward chemical. So I urge you, I urge you set goals and then set three action steps for achieving each goal. Can you do that? Can you do that? This requires, okay, a different part of your brain. There's a part of your brain that wants to imagine how much money you're going to make, how many people you're going to help, and what your lifestyle is going to be like. That's the easy part. That's accessing that occipital lobe, the visual cortex part of your brain that can imagine. That's the easy part. The slightly harder part, okay, is to create just three action steps for each goal that you have. How are you going to achieve it? Let me give you an example that has nothing to do with business. And every one of you will know what I'm talking about. If you wanted to release weight, okay, if you wanted to release weight, let's say, you know, let's say ten pounds, you, you know, or ten kilos, and you create a vision for how you're going to feel and how you're going to look. And you created some goals, okay, that you're going to release £3 this month and £3 next month and £3 the month after that. Then the next layer of that that I'm talking about when we're setting goals is how specifically are you going to release three pounds this week or this month? Well, you can exercise. Great. What kind of exercise? Right. How long are you going to do it for? What about diet? What about sleep? What about reduction of stress? Those are all things that will affect your ability to release weight and keep it off, right? So when you're setting your business goals, set the goal, but then come up with three things that you can do to achieve that goal. So if you set a goal for an extra $5,000 or $10,000, then how are you going to achieve it? Now, what do you do when you don't know the answer? I don't know how I'm going to achieve it. Would it make sense for you to ask your bio computer a better question? Who would know? Let me know who would know. What video can I watch on YouTube. What training can I take? What coach can I hire? What book can I read? Because the how to achieve any goal is achievable, right? If you don't know how to, that's okay. But you cannot allow the fact that you may not know how to to hold you back from actually doing what is required. Does that make sense? If the how to exists and you don't know it, in the absence of how to, your brain is going to go to default mode of fear, uncertainty and doubt. And when fear, uncertainty, and doubt are activated in the brain, you actually deactivate the motivational and behavioral circuit in the brain. You deactivate the very part of your brain that you need in order to take action. So in the absence of the knowledge and skills, then you have to learn how to. All right? And that's part of why, you know, my goal is to create another thousand business millionaires, okay? In the next year. I've created thousands already. My goal is to create thousands more business millionaires. How many of you would like to be a business millionaire where your business is creating enough income for you to live the lifestyle of your dreams? Yesterday, I mentioned that business can be the royal road to your financial freedom, right? Business can be the royal road to your financial freedom, right?
