How To Stay Calm During This Coronavirus Pandemic - John Assaraf

John Assaraf teaches three breathing and mindfulness practices to manage fear during the early pandemic: Take Six (paced breathing), AYA (awareness, intention, action), and Flip the Switch. He covers the neuroscience of panic, practical precautions like handwashing and sleep, and a 3P framework of perspective, poise, and process.

Hey my friends, I hope you're doing great. I thought I'd take this opportunity to just connect and talk about this coronavirus and the pandemic that is happening all over the world right now and maybe give you a little bit of peace of mind, a few tools to use some, some ideas of what you can do to navigate through this extreme, extremely confusing, stressful and anxiety leaned in time. And so before I get into, I did a little bit of research, actually a lot of research all day to really try and make, you know, heads, heads or tails out of all of the information that's out there. And so let's just do a little test. If you can hear me and see me, just let me know that hey John, I can hear you and see you. And let's have a little discussion around what's really going on. All right, the chat discussion. Let's be open minded, let's see how we can help each other. Knowledge is potential power, right when you use it. But there's so much misinformation out there and so many, you know, just people saying stupid things. I find. Anyway. Hi Dave. Hi Ricky. Nice to have you guys on. And so like I said, I made a couple of notes, I have a bunch of, I've got a couple of tools to give each one of you that I think can help you during this time. What I can share, you know, as people start to join is, you know, I've got two children, I'm a father, I've got two sons, I've got, you know, my wife, I've got my mother in law who's in her 80s, my parents are in their 80s, my brother, my sister, lots of friends, lots of amazing students and clients and friends that are all in this together. And I think, you know, one of the things that is really, really critical for us to do to help each other first get and stay calm and then navigate through all of the different messages that are out there. And many of you know, you know, my passion is brain research, my passion is neuropsychology and the mindset around behavior and perspective and paradigms. But you may not know that I'm super into health and well being and I don't know if it's me wanting to live better, longer or what it might be. But I'm just fascinated with health and well being. So what I want to do is I just want to share what I've discovered. I've got two little, I got some pad over here with all of my notes that I've been taking Listening to probably about six hours of expert training and expert information and reading I don't know how many articles I read in the last 24 hours. Just trying to make heads and tails out of this. Now, many of you know this coronavirus started in December, January of last year, December, January, December of last year, January of this year in Wuhan, China. It's a new type of virus that we don't have a vaccine for. What I'm seeing right now is just a lot of panic right in the market, a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety, a lot of fear, which in my world that means that Einstein has shut down and Frankenstein is active, or you know, Frankenstein's monster is active. And a lot of times when we are reacting irrationally or we're reacting abruptly, that's a result of a lack of knowledge, a lack of skill, lack of awareness, and a lack of really having facts that will drive intelligent thought processes and behaviors. So what I want to share with you is I want to, I want to read a few things to you that, that I discovered. I want to just remind you, I'm not a doctor, I'm not an immunologist, I'm a, I think a well educated consumer just like you. I have real concerns about this, but I think they're in perspective. I have some solutions that I'm taking for myself. My wife is my mother in law's, etc. So let me just share with you some of the stuff that I've read. And if you're in the stock market or the real estate market, or you're job is in jeopardy, or cash flows in jeopardy, the most important thing that you can be doing right now is really mastering your mindset and your emotional control so that you actually use your brain better. And many of you know, and I'll just give you an analogy, you know, when we're in a state of anxiety, stress, panic, self doubt and fear, then we're activating that Frankenstein part of the brain that I talk about in a lot of my trainings in my newest book. And when the Frankenstein part of the brain comes up, we start running this, what I call is this what if script. What if, what if I get it? What if I lose more money in the stock market? What if my children have to suffer? What if my wife, what if my mother, what if my father, what if the real estate market goes down? What if, you know, we lose so much money. What if, what if, what if whenever we get into this, what if, I'm going to say a negative or Disempowering loop. We're actually shutting down that Einstein part of the brain. That is actually what we need in order to figure out what if. And so we, when we are in a fearful, stressful, anxiety laden state, we're actually doing ourself a disservice. Because a what if negative mindset and emotional state usually leads to fearful, panicy, abruptive behavior versus our calm, relaxed ability to respond intelligently and, and calmly. So the first thing that I want you all to do is this, let's all agree and maybe you can hit a like or love button that yes, there's a coronavirus. Yes, there's 135,000 people that have got it so far. 400 new cases in the United States. They went from 1300 to 1700 today. Now don't, don't get fearful on me. I'll explain to you what's happening with that as well. The World Health Organization has called it a pandemic. And a pandemic is declared when a new disease for which people do not have immunity. We don't have immunity. Okay. Spreads around the world beyond expectations. Let me repeat that. A pandemic is declared when a new disease for which people do not have an immunity spreads around the world. Now, how infectious is it? Well, according to my research today, it's not as bad as chicken pox is. Okay. It's not as bad. It spreads between people and on surfaces. And how lethal? It's not as lethal as eboli, it's not as lethal as smallpox or the measles. But the reason we're not worried about those, because we have vaccines for those, but we don't have a vaccine yet for this corona vid virus. And so scientists are working on that. And I'll share with you, I wrote out 10 things to do around this. And again, I want to, I want us to operate from a space of knowledge, calmness and intelligence versus fear and ignorance and abruptness. One empowers you, one disempowers you. Would you agree with that? Would you agree with that? If you agree with that, give me like a high five, a love, or just type in something. Yes, John, I agree. And so the, the symptoms range from severe, which is about 10% of the cases, to mild for 90% of the cases. It appears to really affect people over 70, people who are not as healthy, who are smokers. And it takes off slowly at first, but because of the nature of a virus, spreads very, very quickly from surfaces or people. And this is why you're seeing so many events being canceled. I just had to cancel an event that we were supposed to have here in San Diego in June, and we're shifting it over to an online event starting in about a month. So we've had to adjust. And I just wrote an article for or a piece for some of my business clients on becoming an adaptationist. And I heard that from my friend Eben Pagan a few years ago when he and I talked. Is one of the greatest skills you can have right now is learning how to adapt. And right now we have to adapt to a scenario that just is hitting us faster than anything we've probably seen in the last hundred years. And so when we are talking about staying calm, there are three things that I want to share with you, okay? Number one, when the stress center in the brain, the amygdala, fires off, it's the same stress center that everybody has. There's nobody that doesn't have this amygdala center in the brain. There's two almond shaped pieces in your brain on both sides, just above the ear on the brain. And when we sense any real or imagined danger, this fear signal lights up like a Christmas tree. And it sends these neurochemicals in our body called epinephrine or cortisol and norepinephrine. And it causes this anxious feeling for us to feel unsafe. What if I get it? What if my wife gets it? My husband gets it? My children? So we are running a negative disempowering frame in our brain over and over and over again. Now, if we don't get it in check, then it creates this cycle in our brain where we start to watch TV and listen to stuff and start to read stuff that match the worry or the fear that we have. And we keep perpetuating this disempowering emotional or mental or physical state. Now, I want you to understand what I'm not saying is that there isn't reason to be aware, okay? There is reason to be aware, okay? And we may, all of us get it, and there's stuff we can do about it. But the best thing that you can do for you, your family, your friends, your employees is to be able to stay in a calm, relaxed state so that you activate the parts of your brain that can actually help you navigate what you need to navigate and help you do what you need to do effectively, efficiently and in a smart way. And one of the best ways to do that is to use your brain better. And so there's an inner size that I teach every one of My students. It's called take six, Calm the circuits. So when you feel yourself talking negatively, talking in a fearful way, feeling anxious, feeling uncertain, feeling doubtful, feeling scared, feeling fearful, feeling panicked, stop and do this little inner size with me. It's called take six, Calm the Circuits. And the circuits we're trying to calm are the fear circuits, okay? Otherwise known as the amygdala. That activates the sympathetic nervous system, that causes shallow breathing, that causes you to sweat a little bit more, causes your heartbeat to beat a little bit faster, but it also shuts down parts of your thinking center and your behavioral centers. So take sticks, Calm the circuits. Goes like this. Play along with me if you'd like. Take six deep breaths with me right now. Okay? In through your nose. Slowly, slowly, slowly, like this. And then you're going to breathe it out through your mouth. But you're going to breathe it out through your mouth like you're breathing out through a straw. Ready? 3, 2, 1. Inhale through your nose. And then out and. No, I'm not kissing you. And then in through your nose, deeply and slowly and gently. And you breathe back out through your mouth. And as you inhale, you can even repeat this with me. I inhale calmness. I exhale fear, or I exhale stress, or I exhale anxiety, or I exhale uncertainty. The very act of breathing in through your nose and inhaling what you want calmness or peace, and exhaling what you don't want, saying it out loud, causes your brain to focus on what you're inhaling and what you're exhaling, thereby releasing the neurochemicals of what it is that you are exhaling or inhaling. And that simple. Take six, Calm the circuits is the first step just to recompose yourself and to deactivate the sympathetic stress nervous system and activate the parasympathetic nervous system. That's just step one. Step two is part of inner size number two. Another simple way just to get your brain to help work with you instead of against you. It's called aya A I in a I, A and A just stands for awareness. Now, in a state of awareness, I want you to remember this. It's awareness that gives you choice, and choice is what gives you freedom. When you or I or anybody else is in a reactive state, we're reacting based on our subconscious conditioning as a safety mechanism. Based on pay close attention our highest level of training around whatever it is that is causing the stress. We will react to the highest level of training around what it is that is causing the Stress. So if you are unskilled around coronavirus, if you don't understand what to do or how to do it, it's going to cause a stressful situation. It's going to cause you to react. So in the inner size number two called ayah awareness, it just be aware of your thoughts, your emotions, your feelings, your sensations, maybe even your behaviors. But you do it in a relaxed state without any judgment, blame, shame, guilt or justification. No judgment, blame, shame, guilt or justification. Just pure awareness. And then ask yourself a question, what is your intention? That's the I intention. Okay, is all around what do you want to do? Do you want to be calm or do you want to be fearful? Do you want to be anxious or do you want to be in a peaceful state? So you set your intention and then what's one action step you can take so that you get what you want? So in my case today I was watching the news, I've been working from home today and it was just crazy. So I just said stop going to go and research the places where I trust their information. So I went to the CDC and I'll give you a link. Actually let me give you a link right now. I'm going to post a link for you in the chat right now. I'm going to give you two links right now. As I promised I'd give you a few tools here. So take a look at the chat that I'm just putting in there right now. There's two links, one for the CDC which give you some really good straightforward information on that. Then there's world o meters if you want to track what is happening around the world around coronavirus and that should help you. So now we've got take six comma, the circuits, inner size one. We have aya awareness, intention, action. And then there's another one called flip the switch. So another tool is this. Have you ever seen a baby cry and all of a sudden a dog walks by or a balloon comes by or something happens and the baby stops to cry in one nanosecond and pays attention, maybe even smiles or giggles. Well, that baby has flipped the switch from something that was causing it to cry to something that's making it happy. So here's what we can, what we do know from watching babies, but also from watching actors in Hollywood. They can flip the switch from one emotion to another, from one mindset to another. And so why not practice when you catch yourself in a disempowered or negative state, why not flip the switch? Why not deliberately say hey I'm in a disempowered sense state, maybe a negative state. I want to be in an empowered state where I'm more educated. And if you do that now in a calm, relaxed state, okay, you're in control. In a calm, relaxed state, you've activated the left prefrontal cortex, the Albert Einstein part of your brain. And you're able to make much more intelligent decisions. You're able to observe, analyze, and come up with a smart plan. And when you do that, then you are now in the driver's seat instead of allowing all these external people, influences, articles control you. So either you're going to be in control or you're going to be controlled by somebody else. So I much prefer to have you in control, to have you educated, to have you have the tools to do what you need to do. And there is a process called the 3P rule. 3P that I want you to focus on. I'm going to put 3P. And if somebody, all right. Can write what these mean. So the first way to stay in control is the first P is for perspective. Right, perspective. This is not the first time that we've had a pandemic. This is not the first time that a virus has hit our shores or the shores around the world. And so the perspective is this is challenging. Yes. And we will figure it out together. We have a lot of very brilliant people on this. The way that viruses work is they start off, you know, with a curve that's an inverse curve, like, it goes like this, okay. And it gets worse and worse and worse and worse. But if you take a look at what's happening in China in the last 24 or 48 hours, they've only had three or five new cases. So they were able to get ahead of the curve by quarantining, by doing some testing, and by getting people to be quarantined long enough, which is two to 14 days, you know, for the incubation period to subside before it keeps spreading through people or on services. Italy has seen a spike of biblical proportions today with over a thousand deaths already. So China's on its way down, Italy's still on its way up, and we're in the early stages of what's happening right now. So instead of being fearful, be knowledgeable and aware. So here in the United States, all the predictions are it's going to get worse before it gets better as far as the spreading of the virus. And there's a lot of things that we can do to keep us in control. And I'LL give you a list right now. So the first rule is perspective. The second people P is for poise. Can somebody write these down? So perspective is first thing. Second is poise is be. You know, put yourself in a position where you're not panicking, you're centered, okay? You're totally poignant with who you are and your congruency with staying healthy. And then the third P. All right, this for process. Do you have a process to gather the knowledge? Do you have a process for what you want to do for your health? I'm going to give you 10 things. I'm going to actually put them. I'm going to put them. Oops, my phone's ringing. I'm going to put them in the chat also, so you can copy it if you like. Just you have. So we have perspective, poise and process. So number one, what should you do? Number one is you've got to stay calm so you can respond intelligently instead of react abruptly. Let me give you a copy of all this. Would you like a copy? If you want a copy of all 10 of these, let me go to my document over here. And if you tell me if enough people say, john, I want this, I'll just put this. Put these 10 in here right now and we can go through them. Let me just do a control copy and let me show. Did you want these 10 things again, there's nothing to. There's nothing to do other than say, yeah, John, I want. If enough people hit the like or the love button to say, yes, John, please, I'll do so. Number one, stay calm so you can respond intelligently versus react. All right, abruptly. So I'll give you all 10, then I'll just hit the send button and you'll all get. Number two is you have to educate yourself so you know the facts from the fiction. I have heard so many different things about what vitamins to take, what minerals to take, how colloidal silver or gold blocks out the virus. Nonsense. It's bullshit. There's no evidence to that whatsoever. But you have to be able to separate the fact from the fiction. You have to also consider leveling up your immune system. So there are some things you can do to level up your immune system. You can make sure you get, you know, six to eight hours of sleep. You can make sure that you eat extremely healthy. You can make sure that you meditate. You can make sure that you walk. You can make sure that you get some fresh air. You can do some things to upgrade your immune system right now, which has been around for millions of years of evolution. And so not everybody is going to get the virus. 90% of people who do get the virus, it'll be a mild case. 10% are going to be challenged. And most of the 10%, it seems like it's people over 70 with respiratory issues, type 1 and 2 diabetes, people who have smoked, et cetera. So. So you can buy a process of deductive reasoning, say that there's a very small likelihood that you're going to get it. And when you take some of the precautions I'm going to share with you, it's going to be even less. And I'll share with you exactly what I'm doing with my family. So, for example, wash your hands. So the rule of thumb, no pun intended, right? Is you wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. At least 20 seconds. Now, it's a long time to wash hands for at least 20 seconds, but water and soap seems to be enough on counters and surfaces. Disinfect counters, doorknobs, surfaces, light switches, and don't touch them for five minutes. All of the research that I've done from the medical community is after you wipe up a surface, okay, let it dry for five minutes. All right? So disinfect the surfaces. Tables count as light switches. If you're going to, you know, cough or sneeze into your. Into your arm, Kleenex, throw it, you know, in the trash somewhere. For the next two to four weeks, Stay away from anywhere that you absolutely don't need to be at. Stay away from anywhere you absolutely don't need to be at. Why do you think that. That so many events are being canceled? There was an event recently on the east coast of the United states. There were 3,500 people there. 75 of them got an illness. It seems to spread between people that are closer than six feet together or touching similar services through our mucus membranes and other openings that we have in our body around any fluids. And so I basically, I was supposed to have dinner with a friend. I wasn't feeling 100% to going out, so I canceled that tonight. We've canceled a whole bunch of stuff. I'm still. For example, I still plan on going skiing with my sons next week. I plan on working my immune system so that I am extremely healthy and they are as well. So let me see my other needs. Yes. If you don't need to be at places, just stay away from any group settings that's going to be causing you to be in close proximity to people. So stay Inside for a while. I, and this is for me. It may not work for you. I go to the gym. Usually I have a home gym, but I also go to the gym down the street. I'm not going to the gym where other people, you know, sweat on equipment. Unless you want to wipe down the equipment and wait and then use the equipment. And that's because viruses live in, in moisture and can be on the equipment number. That was number seven. And then number eight is always plan for a what if scenario. So what if you get it? What if. Now do it in a calm, relaxed state. So what will you do? Right? What will you do? And the best way for you to get your brain working on this is come up with a plan. If I'm feeling the symptoms, which are, give me a second. Fever, achy. Let me just see. I wrote these down as well. So fever, fatigue, dry cough, shortness of breath. Fever, fatigue, dry cough, shortness of breath. So if you're feeling any of that, then what are you going to do? Self quarantine, right? If you're, if you're, you know, end up catching the virus or you end up being around somebody who has it, just, just self quarantine and so build out a what if scenario. If you get it or a family member gets it, what are you going to do? And then the last one that I wrote over here, and I'm going to, I'm going to hit the send so you can all see it, right? So this is the list that I created for you and for me is meditate daily to increase your immune system and your intuition. A lot of people don't know this, but meditation actually upgrades your immune system and increases your intuition so you're more in touch with what you should do. And then that reduces your stress and your fear and your anxiety as well. So those are 10 of the things that I wrote there for you. Let me see if there's anything else that I have over here. There's a couple things that I picked up from the Life Extension foundation where I get a lot of my vitamins. They said if you get the virus, you want to consider starting to take some zinc lozenges. So I always have zinc lozenges in the house. I always eat garlic all the time. But they, they recommend 9,000 to 18,000 milligrams of high allicin, garlic supplements, vitamin D as well. And this is if you get the symptoms, to reduce the symptoms, to give your immune system a boost, they recommend vitamin D. And those are three that I'm Aware of that are pretty good. So from a pure perspective, all right. Of being informed, from a pure perspective of not panicking, follow those 10 things that I just, you know, that I just wrote out for you. Take a look at the cdc, the center for Disease Control. Take a look at what they've got. They seem to have honest information that I rely on and that seems to be up to speed. Okay, so there's the benefit of all of the. Greg. Rex, buddy, how are you? Hi there, Eva. I see you're on there as well. Appreciate that. Whoever puts any promotions up there, like Charles Peck, I delete them. So please don't use my forum to put your personal development stuff on there, your promotions, and my team will delete them as well. So if you want to share something, you know, that isn't your product or service and an opinion, let's, let's talk. Okay. So what are you doing? What do you think? Did this help you a little bit? Can you use some of the inner sizes? Take six. Calm the circus. Aya, flip the switch. Those are three of them, but stay calm. All right. This too shall pass. Does it get more challenging before it gets better? Yeah, that's the nature of a virus. Hey there, Christy, nice to have you on. And Aaron and Teresa and Lisa and Kristen and Nari and Julie. Yeah, Lowry, hello there. Awesome. Awesome. All right, so Larry is. You talk about, you know, money in the stock market. The stock market has taken, you know, a beating of, you know, 20% today. You know, a huge beating. If you have a, the availability to buy on the down to average out your portfolio, you can. Some of the people that I'm talking to right now are reallocating some of their assets. I'm looking at doing that right now to the stocks that have been hit the hardest, that had the valuations that were fair in the marketplace to begin with, that we think over the next 3, 6, 9, 12 months are going to get better. In times like this, we could do a little poll. In times like this, do you agree that there are some people, let's say we're talking about just investing. There are some people that make a fortune because they buy now when everybody else is selling. Is that a yes or a yes? Okay. Is that a yes or a yes? Of course. Christine, my wife, and our home keepers here have stuff. So I don't know. I use soap and water myself. Right. So. Hey there, Marcia. So if you're a realtor right now, interest rates are the lowest they have been in a long time. And chances are they're going to be lower right now if the market is challenged. It's a great time for buyers. And so I've got some clients are in the mortgage business as well, and so they're, you know, they're able to get a lot of business. So for people who are serious of buying a home, chances are prices are going to drop a little bit, mortgage rates are down. It's a double win. So you have to frame things in a way that the timing is perfect for those people. It may not be for homeowners right now. They're going to be able to sell business faster. All right, let's see, let's see. I've got a lot of. Lots of questions or not questions, but comments over here. Listen, we know there's. There's always highs and lows, ups and downs, good times, challenging times. And how we frame it, right. Is really important. You know, how we frame something, we can look at the negative of everything and we say, okay, well, you know, what can we do to look at this in a different way, right? So I want to make sure that I'm very, very clear, right? I don't want anybody to die. I don't want anybody to be sick. I don't want anything bad to happen to anybody. What I want is for people to be prepared. Right. Right now we're faced with a challenge in the United States where we don't have enough testing kits, and if a lot of people get sick, we don't have enough respirators or hospital beds to deal with that. In China, they built hospitals like that. We were behind the eight ball and are behind the eight ball. So that means that instead of relying on the government or agencies to take care of care of you, empower yourself and say, what can I do to be better prepared? And the list that I put up, and I'll see, I'll put it up again, right? For those of you who joined that little east, help you reduce, okay, your risk. Right. So reduce your risk. So does it make you risk free? No, none of us are risk free. Unless you're quarantined in a Faraday cage where not even electromagnetic frequency could get in. But you can do things to help yourself that'll reduce the risk. And that's what it's all about. Okay, so, Dina, it depends on the reit, right? So I like investing in real estate, and timing is everything. So there's certain deals in the stock market that I looked at today that are looking great. There's certain real estate, you know, Opportunities that are going to show up. There's, there's certain partnerships that are looking great. So everybody has to make their, their own decisions. Okay. All right. So, hi there, Sherry Doyle. Hi there, Joe. Hi there, Irene. Leonardo. Carrie. Awesome, awesome, awesome. Hi there. If you enjoyed this, hit the like or the love button and give me a high five again. I just did this. I just want to. I'm in this with you. And so if I have any information here that is helpful to me and my family, I want to help you and your family. You know, there's nothing to buy, nothing to sign up for. This is just, you know, one of the things that my friend Lisa Sasevich said many, many years ago. She said, you know, lift as you climb. Well, I'm trying to lift this load for myself to upgrade my knowledge and my skill, and I want to share it with you. And hi there. My brother, Tristan Truscott. How you doing, buddy? Right. So if we help each other and we separate fact from fiction and hype, you know, and the bullshit from reality by being calm, so we can respond and analyze and check this against that. You know, I checked a whole bunch of my information that I shared with you earlier on with a bunch of experts who are way smarter than I am. Like I said, you know, I love to study the brain and neuropsychology and neuroscience. I'm not an immunologist, but I certainly focus on health and well being and there's fundamentals, if not a little bit more. So let me say hello to a few of you. Susan. I've put the 10 list in twice. Hi there, Janine. Hi there. Rachel Combs. I'll put the list in again. So I just typed the list in again. Hi there, Christine. Thank you. Hi, Meredith. Hi there. George Mallow and Dina Bravo. Stephanie Salazar. My mom is doing great. Thank you for asking. She's just, you know, turn, turned the switch. She's exercising and she's walking. Maria. You're welcome. Aaron Quinn. Yeah, elderberry is great. Just be concerned with the sugar, but I know there's elderberries. Great. My wife and I were just talking elderberry. Vitamin C is good as well, so. But again, just remember, these are not panaceas. Right. What we're looking to do is none of these are going to stop the virus, but they can help with the immune system that can stop or make your journey if you help have the virus a little bit less. Yes. Tristan. Jack Schechter. John. Do you think that a course in LP is a good idea for somebody who worries A lot. Absolutely. Jack, if you worry a lot, I highly recommend you consider picking up my book, Inner Size, which is there. You get a ton of stuff, plus some free audios just for you. Jack, it's like 10, 12 bucks on Amazon. Let's see. Angela, you are so welcome. D. Smith. D. Smith. There's lots of stuff you can do without having to buy the supplements.
